And I want to make certain I stay far from it myself. This book struck me as being written as part of a healing process for the author who was maybe bruised up rather badly by a business that can be hard on an actual artist. This book did a great job describing them. Feb 25, Jennifer rated it did not like it.
Read this one quickly, but it was not so good. A very dark satire on life in Hollywood, which is either meant to be completely over the top or the author is just an extremely negative person. And it seemed so thinly veiled - calling the show in the book "I Love My Urban Buddies" when the biographical information said the author directed "Friends," naming actresses on the show "Janice Hairston" and "Betty Balz" presumbly instead of Jennifer Aniston and Courtney Cox , etc.

It's not really clear who the audience for this book should be - I'm uncertain that those who aren't associated with the television industry would be terribly interested. However, the author seems to aim the book toward those who have no knowledge of the industry - and who can be convinced of its evil-ness. As a novel, it's an interesting read that can lead to interesting discussion, but as a commentary on the industry - i An interesting book.

The only thing I think is exaggerated is that all these things happened on one set. I'm sure at least one of the things that he describes happens on every show.

I don't doubt for a second, however, the realism behind this thinly veiled fiction. The book started out a little slowly, but once you get into it, I thought it was pretty good, in a grimly comic sort of way. Not only as an actor, but also a formerly-busy sitcom director, Robby Benson knows exactly what he writes, and living on the fringes of Hollywood, and knowing a few people in the trenches of the industry, this all sounds true.
Outrageous as it is, I've no doubt that much of this is happening somewhere in the studios that make up this crazy, surreal, rather frightening business. You'll read it just to hope to see justice done to the cruel assholes though in Hollywood, what is justice?

I especially enjoy the adventures of the cast and crew of "My Urban Buddies", which in interviews Benson denies being anything like the cast of the series "Friends", which he occaisionally directed. I think this isn't actually exaggerated at all, but that's probably because I lived and worked in La La Land.
This is actually an enjoyable if extremely cynical book If an editor had stepped in and made it a third like it would have been. Not what I expected - beautifully written!!
