Public art in Canada : critical perspectives (Book, ) [bahana-line.com]

I wanted to learn more about public art and about how conceptualizations of Canadian identity inform art-making. My local library had this book, so I went for it. Like most anthologies of academic writing, the quality in this one is pretty mixed, although none of the essays completely crashed and burned, which is a bit of a triumph. The book is divided into four parts: Each of the sections also included at least one chapter documenting a a specific public art piece grounded in conceptual issues that fit into the overall section theme.

Did I learn about public art? Not too much - but I already knew a lot about art, so the broad issues weren't new. Please create a new list with a new name; move some items to a new or existing list; or delete some items.

In general, it denotes a mass population of people who associate through a common interest. This definition could be extended to a group or organization who wish to solve a similar problem. In reviewing Public Art in Canada: Critical Perspectives , I interpret site specificity as interventionist and situational artists recognizing a problem and organizing within that given situation. After reading this publication, I am duly reminded that nothing really changes over time. Boyer installed his work in Montreal in It was removed in following an intense debate.

It is then understandable that some artists have chosen a more interventionist approach to further a public discourse. We learn of the artistic pursuit for political justice, with many works demonstrating a deep and active engagement to integrate art and everyday life.
