And thanks to the author for providing me a copy for review. PG It's said that everyone in the world believes, to some degree, that they are special. Wouldn't it be ironic then, that the one person who doesn't think she's special, turns out to be the single most important person in the world?
For Nyminia, that's what she's just learned - she's the thread, holding everything together. Going from being an unwanted weirdo orphan, to someone with a huge responsibility and formerly unrealized power, her reality shifted overnight. Surviving a fire that should have left even her bones unrecognizable, she's hurled into a new life, and a new home. She makes new friends, is introduced to love, and fights a battle like no other.
I loved her personality, and the growth she went through during her adventure. With a massively overwhelming new life to take on, she handled it all with strength and grace I know I wouldn't have, in her shoes. As if that wasn't enough, the ending gave a rather intense glimpse into her upcoming challenges, and they make everything she goes through in this book, look dim.
While it was predictable, it is exciting, and would have any reader hooked to continue following Nyminia through her adventure. Well written and put together nicely, I enjoyed this author's work. She is talented, spun a fantastic adventure with originality I hadn't expected. I would definitely recommend this book to other readers, and am grateful to have had the opportunity to experience this story.

Excellent storyline i just felt like there was too much going on in some scenes to catch on to leaving me slightly confused and i felt that there could at least have been more "magic" or a deeper connection between nym and marcus..

Nym seemed like a strong heroine however marcus didnt come off as how the other student's portrayed him maybe in the past yes but i couldn't seem to put the marcus that nym knew and the marcus that everyone else knew together, he seem stoic and scary to others but when we read about him he just didnt have that vibe and every girl loves the brooding types which he wasn't.
They just seemed like two completely different marcus'. But otherwise it was an okay - good read. Dec 06, Donna Mulvenna rated it it was amazing. I received this book as a gift and was happy to exchange for my honest opinion and assess its suitability for my niece who wanted a heroine set in a fantasy world. It was also refreshingly well-written and laugh-out-loud funny.
Most of all, Nyminia, is a strong female character who meets the challenges life throws at her head on. She comes out the other side finding her unique place in the world. Sure to be a hit for all readers appreciating weirdness, coolness, and in need of an anti-blushing spell. Dec 18, Laura Veals rated it it was amazing Recommends it for: YA Fantasy Readers Ages Spoiler-Free Review Actual rating: What if that power made you a target? Running from her past, her new circumstances bring her to a life at Rowling-Burroughs University. While trying to learn about the power she possesses, Nyminia navigates her way through friendship, love, and faces dangerous challenges from unexpected foes.
Poor Nyminia has really had a rough start in life. I won't reveal much about her history, however, very early in the book, she discovers that she has special powers which make her a target. It is easy to empathize with her as she is our MC and her first-person perspective allows us inside her mind, hearing her frequent internal monologue. She experiences a spectrum of emotions as she discovers more and more about the mysteries surrounding her powers and the danger she frequently finds herself in. My absolute favorite vampire.
I want to look that good when I'm a few thousand years old. I mean, the guy's introduced to us as a hot librarian, what's not to love? Marcus is an excellent example of how a partner should act within a relationship. He's not your typical brooding, distant YA male character.
He is supportive of Nyminia and protects her while giving her space to grow and make her own discoveries. I think he is an excellent role-model for younger individuals gaining perspective on what a love-relationship should be like. I'll have what she's having. I don't know how that girl has so much pep and energy, but I really wish I could find a decent coffee that did the same.
She is a phenomenal example of a true friend, and readers will enjoy watching their bond grow. She also has a special, um, power Her brothers, Cash and Kit, share a similar power and I am excited to see them again in the next book. I won't give away too much. They are also developing well and play into the story's dynamics and growth of Nyminia.
All in all, I am excited to see how these characters continue to develop over book II. I think they have a great foundation. They feel "real", which is what we all want in a fictional character, and Tuesday made me fall in love with them. The fate-paired characters are essentially strangers when they find out that they are destined to be together, which creates an interesting dynamic for two people who have just recently met.
They both choose to take it slow, at their own pace, allowing intimacy set in naturally as they get to know each other throughout the story. Just enough for some spice and intrigue, but everyone keeps their clothing on. Well obviously I can't put this book down because I have now read it three times. For full disclosure, I assisted with a beta-read of the first draft, and have read a physical published copy twice.
Each time I read it, I can picture everything very clearly in my mind, much like a movie. This book is excellent for fans of film and those who consider themselves highly visual. Chapters are shorter and end on a cliff-hanger, which pulls you in to keep reading and continue on with the adventure. Tuesday has a penchant for dialogue. Most chapters have excellent forward motion because of the engaging dialogue.
You get swept into a conversation between characters and can actually feel a palpable tension, fear, happiness, embarrassment etc. She is truly a talented weaver of words, and I am thrilled to read the second book. For fun, read the chapter names in the table of contents at the very beginning of the book.

When a young girl is discovered, unscathed, in a burnt down orphanage, she is whisked away to a land of magic, where she is to attend University. She soon learns that she is part of an ancient prophecy where her true name, Nyminia originated, and soon falls into an unconventional romance with a two thousand year old vampire veteran, Marcus.

I shared in every one of her victories and losses, as though I were actually right beside her on every step of her journey. Her unusual appearance captivated me: I now leave you with one last quote from the Headmistress of RBU. The quote is taken from near the start of the novel when the prophecy concerning Nyminia is first mentioned. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would highly recommend that you give it a read. Recommended for lovers of fantasy and folklore. The thing is, I found this book un-readable. I'll probably never get a free giveaway again, but I have to be honest here. The writing was amateurish and not engaging. It's been a few weeks since I put this book back truly meaning to get back to it until finally admitting to myself that I'm not going to read anymore, and the fact is that when I sat down to write this review I could recall This is the first Goodreads giveaway I've received and reviewed, so I'm not really sure what the protocol is.

The cover for Of Flesh and Fire has a little much going on for me, but I do like it. Even though there are dragons and werewolves and vampires, Tuesday has made this story very fun to read. I think the writing could be a little stronger, but this did not take away from my overall enjoyment of the story. Even in the face of a life changing situation, the main character does things with style and humor. I recommend this book to anyone who loves paranormal and fantasy stories.

It was quite a 5-star book just because I felt there were things in the story that went way too fast. I would have loved a little more content to further understand things. Of course, once the end came and I realized the second book wasn't released yet, I got frustrated and had to find a book friend to share all my frustrations with.
I can't wait to read the next book!!!!! Certainly there was no feelings of deep live or connection- everything was just superficial and skin deep. Back The Shattered Vine: With a unique, pleasingly consistent magic system based on the production and consumption of wine, urban fantasist Gilman the Retrievers series turns a standard coming-of-age tale into something wholly new.
Young Jerzy, a vineyard slave, possesses the rare and extraordinary ability of the Vinearts, magicians who create spellwines from the most potent grapes. When someone begins sabotaging the fields of the traditionally reclusive winemakers, it is up to Jerzy and his master to save their way of life. A slow build of tension as Jerzy progresses from slave to student to spy keeps the reader engaged without any need for frenetic fight scenes. The tale is dominated by vivid, absorbing characters, and Jerzy's powerful narrative voice makes his joys and sorrows dramatic, authentic and potent.
This intoxicating high fantasy will satisfy oenophiles and bibliophiles alike. Stirling "Gilman has developed a fascinating, wholly unique magic system, and has peopled her complex world with strong, sympathetic characters and a couple of shocking plot twists. A terrific conceit done very well. I was delighted with it.

The magic of these books arises from the deep exploration of the magic of the close relationship between the wine and winemaker vine and vineart. We come to understand why the people who make the vina are well and truly set aside from the rest of humanity.
Based on "real" world wine-making but taking it to levels undreamt of in our shared reality. This book follows the journey of a vine slave as he is pulled from the fields to become a vineart apprentice.
His entire success is built upon the relationship he's already developed with the soil and the vines. One person found this helpful. Some series come about when a book receives a warm welcome from the reading public. Flesh and Fire shows Gilman planned this series from the start as she uses book one to paint her alternative world with broad strokes while introducing us to characters and conflicts.
The protagonist is a young man risen from slavery to become a wine master Vineart , but an impending conflict which threatens the world he barely has become exposed to interferes with his normal elevation. Gilman's writing is clean, her descriptions make us comfortable in these strange surroundings, and her story is developed with a patience that may put off some readers especially in the early chapters where Jerzy is learning the ropes that tie magic and wine.
I'm ready for Book Two. This book was so unexpected. New magic is really hard to find. I am very much looking forward to subsequent books in this series. My only complaint about this as well as other series books is that it is not a stand-alone book; the ending makes it clear that there is much more to follow.
