Where were the parents? The answer can be complicated by our adult sensibilities, or one can realize there is a certain level of artistic license being taken by each of these authors in order to tell a story. In Curiosity with a Capital S, the author has related tales of two children exploring their new world, the mundane adult restrictions we all experienced were not as limiting as they have to be today and were irrelevant to the tale.

As a young child, my parents would often shoo my sibling and I out the door after breakfast not to be heard or seen again until dinner. Then we would be ushered out the door once again until supper. Did that make them inattentive parents? On the contrary, it was a sign of the times as all our friends in the neighborhood were out there with us making up our own adventures! I highly recommend this book for the target audience - and their parents. Each chapter is a lesson on its own that could bring us back to a time when parents actually talked with their children face-to-face.

Discussing the dangers, consequences, and lessons Stan and Tracy learned can open doors with historical context and lessons for today's lifestyle. I am so glad I received this from Library Thing to review.

I thought it was a great story about a brother and sister who were inseparable during WW II. Stan, being the one with more curiosity always seemed to get in trouble but it always worked out for him in the end. I think this story would be great for children around years old. This story was well written, from the view point of a child, and how they perceived the changes from WW II her family experienced.

I really liked reading how the family was always there for each other and listened to one another. I would be interested in reading a story about Tracy next, since she's carrying on the tradition of being curious. Give this book a try, I don't think you'll be disappointed. Actually, I had given the book to my seven- year- old grandson as a Christmas gift.

I noticed when I returned to his home this week that he had not read any of the book. He's an avid reader, but chooses books about adventure characters or comical school house series. I started reading the book to him each night and was surprised when he begged me to read more. He's actually enjoying historical fiction? After reading the first few chapters, I had to laugh when he said, "Nana, what is a swell?

Experiencing his enjoyment of the book, I will give it a top rating. I am glad he had it read to him rather than attempting it on his own. He is a little young to grasp such concepts as rationing, a safe time when a child could explore his environment on his own, and a time when a parent's word was sacred. The author, Tonya Trimble,is obviously a writer who knows how to write adventure to appeal to everyone - young and old.

My husband and I read the book from cover-to-cover before giving it as a Christmas gift to each of our four grandchildren ages They all thoroughly enjoyed the book and are looking forward to a sequel or perhaps a series of "Curiosity With a Capital. I highly recommend this book. This is a delightful, adventurous story that caught the interest of the children I read it to immediately.

Oct 26, Trish rated it it was ok Shelves: The story itself is laid out in chapters of journal entries that span seventeen months between March and August They are accounts written by an ten year old girl, Tracy Newton and are mostly tales about adventures that include her twelve year old brother, Stan.

The summary of the book leads you to believe that this story represents a snapshot of life during wartimes. To me however it did not. There was not much information, short of living near a base, about the actual war or the emotional climate around it. The author did talk briefly about the ration coupons that were used but little else to tie the story to the time period.

I had a grandfather who served in WWII and hearing the stories from my grandmother, who raised the family while he was gone, this book lacks the realism of the era and typical "way of life" as I have been taught from The story really did not seem to work in the setting. While I tried to remember that the events described in the journal were suppose to be from a ten year old perspective, I couldn't help but roll my eyes at the unrealistic nature of the stories and the passiveness of the parents.

Because of his curiousity and also due to an extreme lack of adult supervision, Stan gets into all kinds of trouble yet more than once in the story he is 'awarded' for his terrible behavior. I questioned if this was the message we want to send to the readers of this book.

Stan and Tracy are put in situations that are either unlikely Stan out-swims a shark? True to journal entry form writing, there was little that tied any of the stories together nor showed the reader of any consequences given for the troublesome behavior. For that reason, I do not recommend this book.

With a brand new rowboat, archery set, tree house, secret cave, beautiful beaches, bridge tending towers, and flying lessons, the children grow up full of curiosity and fun! Stan gets into trouble many times when his curiosity exceeds his experience, but all his scrapes turn out okay although they cost him some punishment time from his parents and principal.

The author includes memories from America during the time period. There may be questions about World War II. Young children will enjoy the adventures of Tracy and Stan. Their parents will enjoy how the stories spark an interest in American history and family hobbies. Dec 18, Joli added it Shelves: Curiosity with a Capital S was an enjoyable read.

The stories and misadventures of brother and sister, Stan and Tracy is told from the viewpoint of younger sister, Tracy. From the very beginning it is clear that Stan is quite a handful in the family - always looking for adventure and has a wondering, wandering mind. Tracy does all that she can to keep in step with her older brother - often when she knows better but she follows him in to trouble as adoring, younger sisters do. I liked the variety Curiosity with a Capital S was an enjoyable read. I liked the variety of adventures that were told in Curiosity with a Capital S because it took me back to a time when I was younger and went exploring with my cousins or friends.

For Stan and Tracy, television wasn't a source of entertainment and they went out and created their own fun. I liked that the author explored a lot of hobbies and interests for her characters. Children are complex and should have the opportunity to find out what they like and not be so limited in their pursuits. However, Stan was so curious that he put himself in some dangerous situations. My favorite quote from the book was from when Stan was found doing maintenance in the school's boiler room, "I had everything working perfectly!
