Egal, auf welche Art und Weise. Immer an seiner Seite Kira.
And I could tell it was a teenager that wrote them - mainly because of the writing and rambling. Little did Sandy know it was because of an online affair - for now her husband has left her for another woman. To make matters worse, she teaches the daughter of that woman. Can we say awkward?
And I do mean stupid situation - I thought it was the most ridiculous scenario the author could have put her in; completely obvious, and I think that made it worse, cause you knew before Sandy knew what was going to happen. I have a friend who gave me a nickname for a stupid character like that: The climax had me turning the page, just to see what would happen. Again, everything was obvious. And this book was supposed to be a thriller?
I honestly don't know how the editors thought most of this was acceptable. Most of the details? Not needed whatsoever; they were just frivolous things. And it took away from the actual plot or The book could have shrunk by at least a third if they were removed.
Moving on, outside of the unneeded details, the writing was atrocious. Here are a few examples: This was in regards to his daughter wearing perfume. Not only is it not needed, but also kinda creepy because he's essentially talking about his daughter and her "natural smell" Since when was quiche a gendered food? Since when did we gender foods??? Even if a character said this, even if it could have been taken as a joke Just an author thinking that quiche is a "woman's food. How did this even get past the editors? There are plenty more examples of how bad this writing truly is, but honestly, that would take up the entire review and then some.
I was really hoping for something better, considering I guess a lot of people really like Joy Fielding's novels.
Who likes to be referred to as God. We'll keep it safe at the Wu house. As Sheriff John Weber would attest, the deadliest predators to date in his tiny hamlet were the alligators lurking in the nearby swamps. There were many things to like about this book and a few things to passionately dislike. I would have to agree with the writer who made the comment about Delilah's weight. New Fairy Tales , eds. Moving on, there are a few more issues well, really, there's a plethora of issues, but I'll just deal with these next couple. Ninety-nine percent of the characters in this damn novel hate on it and hate on the women who partake in it because, ya know, there are absolutely no men who don't have cosmetic surgery at all. Within the first few paragraphs of the book, there's a rant about "fake" boobs and how they're terrible to "real" boobs and blah, blah, fucking blah. After the fourth or fifth time, I got it, okay, Fielding?
I get that you hate cosmetic surgery and the women who partake in it for whatever outrageous reason. On top of that, there was so much emphasis on a woman's "natural" everything again, no mention of men It was nauseating to read.
Second of all, the use of being gay as a plot point, and the outrageous homophobia in the book. There are people who are homophobic and say the f-slur. There are people who might send lists of people they think are gay from appearance only and use the f-slur for them. The fact that Joey calls everyone the f-slur?
And no one, not even the teachers call him out on it? Loving this novel, as a queer person. Good to know that there pleasant characters in it, especially with lines like, "If a boy lacked six-pack abs, if he dressed differently, like Victor Drummond, or was quiet and sensitive, like Brian Hensen, then he was a weirdo, or worse, a homosexual.
That's just the end-all of everything, isn't it? The worse you can possibly be? There's also this gem, though it made me laugh out of incredulity, even if it was still homophobic: Did he really think that spending time with his sister and being home by midnight on a Saturday night was okay? Were the kids right about him? Yup, that's exactly why I'm not straight, ya got me, skippy!
Like the Botox thing, there was this weird fixation on whether or not characters were gay, and ew, how weird is that? Like, okay, again, I get it, Fielding. You think gay people are weird and only used to move the slow as fuck plot along.
Still moving on I have a lot to say about this bullshit of a novel, sorry not sorry I disliked or hated all of them. They really had not redeeming qualities, except for maybe Tim or Brian. But the men were either cheaters, misogynistic, abusive, or all three. The women were all portrayed as "bitches. Throughout ninety-nine percent of the novel, Delilah was just "the fat girl," with nothing else going for her. Everything she did or said always had to relate back to her weight, no matter what.
Even though I didn't figure it out till the very end anyway, the way it was handled was pretty much just, "Oh, well, I just wanted to kill you because you ridiculed me or got in my way. Just make the fat girl the murderer because she was bullied. Man, what a surprise. I guess this also goes back to the writing But literally, nothing happened in this novel.
Or at least, nothing that was very interesting.
A lot just goes back to backstory, backstory Nothing really exciting happens until the last third of the book. I really don't care about any of these characters. Nothing happens that makes me want to care. They all just have their own problems, yes, but they aren't presented in a way that makes me want to console with any one character.
If anything, the writing just makes me want to go, "Oh, well, it's their fault they're in the situation, and they should figure a way out of it. Wasn't that good of writing. The last twenty or so pages I just skimmed. This is the first Joy Fielding book I read, and it will be my last. Jun 28, Chris rated it liked it Shelves: There were many things to like about this book and a few things to passionately dislike. So which one should I talk about? There are three major points-of-view in this story: The setting, a small town in alligator alley in Florida, worked well.
I don't like coming across teachers in books that are not good role models to the profession.
