In many respects, it is the type of personal narrative that many people who lived through the WWII and post-war years could write. Yet because of that, it provides insight and a story that many readers will be able to relate to on a personal level. Many readers might be unwilling to share such details with a close friend, and so it takes unusual self-confidence to put them in a book and share them with the world.
This is an easy read and if you have ever considered writing a memoir of your life to share with family and future generations, this is a good model. That alone is worth 5 stars.

His intelligence and charming well-traveled demeanor intrigued my curiosity, and I would like to think that my ear for languages and immediate detection of his very subdued Germanic accent piqued his interest in my personality. For a year, the title of this book was retained in my mind until I finally gave it the attention it turned out to deserve.
Having completely read this compelling book in around twelve hours, I can tell you that it is worth your time. This is the compelling story of the life of Karl as he grows from toddler to man in a Germany first engulfed by Nazi fanaticism during World War Two, then consumed by Allied Forces in the post-war period. Karl brings his experiences to life in vivid detail, discussing the need to be smart and stealthy to simply survive. No one who reads this book could possibly be disappointed.
One person found this helpful. Strick has given us an amazing account of what life was like to be a small boy in Germany during WWII. The book is a page turner, with adventure, and humor as well. You get a wonderful view of his incredible mother. Her courage, strength and fortitude carries this story as she goes to all lengths to protect her son.
His family members, also are very entertaining characters! Strick's post war story is equally as fascinating. His road to his later successes is impressive.

We went through hard ship under Nazi Regime and than under communists. I defected in for West Germany, to the State of Hessen. Some of my family went to the Cologne area and so I got to know some people from there.
Since I did not knew the experience of the people of the western part of germany during the war yes, I was aware of the bombing,that happened all over Germany ,I was very curious what that young man Karl Heinz went through. It was very interesting to read his story.
