The well organized read relates history and legacy to development of parliaments, the Church in England, towns and trade as well as to development of English common law and personal freedom. Care is taken not to embellish the almost mythical role of the MC as it was never intended to apply to privileges of the third estate or to common law.

There is a particularly detailed and informative look at the common, royal and canon court systems around John's time. At the end of the book are interesting and informative short biographies from Alfred and Charlemagne to Frederick II including, of course, John and his family. Especially interesting is the role of Sir Edmond Coke in interpreting the role of the MC in application to common law leading to its legal legacy as we know it today. It's a great job even though Coke is missing from the end biographies.
