Tales of Revenge & Deception

I wholeheartedly recommend this book. I needed some time out from reading John Julius Norwich's heavyweight 'History of Venice', and so - as I do from time to time - I decided to dip into a collection of short stories to see if I could find some new writers to enjoy; and I chanced upon 'Crooked Tales'. I especially enjoyed Eric Gates' 'Death of a Sparrowman' beautifully constructed and with a corker of a twist , Fiona Quinn's 'A Crooked Mile' where the author's heroine uses her sixth sense to track down a man suffering from Alzheimers' ahead of a coming storm , Ulla Hakanson's 'Squatter' a nutty tale of squirrels , and Joseph Mark Brewer's 'Nothing But the Truth' where a neighbour recounts the story of the troubled boy next door.

The other stories were easy enough to read, but it is the four I mention above that really grabbed me.

Therefore, overall, I think this collection clocks in with four stars - better overall, I might add, than many collections I have struggled through. Well this is the book for you! What is Lexi to do when she starts to hear a rhyme? Figure it out of course!

If you're looking for a few quick literary bites, I recommend Crooked Tales. I'm going to be honest here I've never been a lover of short stories, I prefer a huge weighty tome I can sink my teeth into.

I was sent an advance copy of Crooked Tales by one of the authors, Eric Gates, who is a friend. I love Eric's work so was happy to read these. I think I'm a convert! I really, really enjoyed them. To be able to read a complete story when I've got a spare half hour is a pleasure. I was surprised how quickly I got to know the characters in each story, how they packed a beginning, a middle and an end into so few pages. But most of all, I liked how now, given these little tasters, it makes me want to check out their other work! See all 9 reviews. Most recent customer reviews.

This is a compelling story that highlights the conflict between two diverse cultures, with the best of one meeting the worst of the other. Incredibly insightful it provides a harsh look at the attitudes of the pseudo intellectual professor when offered the kindness of the natives. The unexpected climax is rewarding and beautifully handled.

Mark Fine remains one of my favourite authors. Another favourite of mine is Anita Kovacevic's "Beneath," a truly unique story of the battle of wills! This whole book is filled with well-written suspenseful gems. Sep 23, Ulla rated it it was amazing Shelves: The stories are wildly different.
