We each have our own perceptions and paths in our life. I would just rather spend the time I have on this earth exploring and mastering my path and experiences and this book has added to both of those. This man, the author, Richard Causton, single handedly led the propagation of this religious movement in England as a pioneer in the late 70's and 80's I believe - in any case, YouTube has a Richard Causton channel and I was amazed how simply and profoundly he describes the basics of this Buddhism.
If you are interested in learning about this practice and his lectures - I recommend this book and the YouTube Videos some of them are poor quality - but most of them are fantastic, if you ask me. I purchased 3 or 4 of these books from various sellers to give to friends as I think it is out of print now. It's a great book to understand the basics of Nichiren Shosu's practice of Buddhism through the SGI Organization, from a layman's perspective.
I was inspired in my practice after listening to him. Richard Causton makes understanding Buddhism easy. He invites us to be happy and live well through an accessible daily practice of Buddhism.
But even better, he helps us bring a Buddhist perspective into everything that happens in every day life! One person found this helpful. The author explains the buddhist concepts the SGI proclaim to follow in a clear and concise manner. The examples provided are very easy to understand. The best explanation I have read and had have since becoming a member in the It gives an in depth explanation about practicing Nichiren Buddhism.
What I love most about it is about the Ten Worlds and what they can become, example how anger can actually become compassion, etc.
I wanted a book beyond that available in the SGI bookshops. This is a great book, much more in-depth than anything I have found there. I purchased this book several months ago. It was used and in fair condition. But due to the fact I read and reread it the book started to fall apart.
Inspite of the scotch tape! So I ordered one again in mint condition used. This book explains so thoroughly Nichiren Buddhism that for a beginner like me it was a true gift. In particular where Causton explains how the natural environment truly reflects human life. I heartily recommend this book to all interested in Nichiren Buddhism.
I can't recommend this enough for people both brand new to Buddhism and for those who've practiced Nichiren Buddhism for many years.

Mar 26, Jo rated it really liked it Shelves: Read it a few years ago, and whilst in hindsight it was a little life changing.
At the time I remember it was a dense read. Very interesting but you knew if you put it down, game over. Quite a lot of eastern philosophy and the late Dick Causton has done a great job of showing how applicable Buddhism is in the everyday of the everyday person. Whether or not you want to start 'practising' or not, it is a deep read. Jul 04, Ameg Rauna rated it it was amazing Shelves: This is definitely a book worth to read as it has an approach which makes more sense for us westerners, than other tough buddhism books.
If it was not because the temple in London is miles away from my house in essex and I do not have a car, I would definitely go every week because this is the kind of Buddhism that match perfectly with me. Sep 06, Elaine rated it liked it. I'm no longer a member, but I recall liking this book more than any of the [many] others that were given to me. Jan 07, Jaime rated it really liked it. Yet another gift from Leah. This book is wonderful and really is helping me to deepen my understanding of the practice of Buddhism.
Feb 24, msleighm rated it it was amazing Shelves: I wish this would be rereleased. It IS difficult to find used copies. Not an easy read, too much information for someone who just started following this practice: Sep 18, Stephen rated it really liked it. I read this book when it was initially published in the late 's It was then called something else, Nichiren Shoshu Buddhism. After the much publicised schism beetween SGI and its parent Buddist organisation its obviously had to be renamed.
Personally it was the acrimony even hatred displayed on both sides that put me off the practise rather than the issues themselves.

I met Dick Causton and belive he and SGI have done much to bring a spiritual dimension to many peoples that wouldn't otherwise have it, lets remember though Buddhism is a very wide ranging family beyond the answers offered in this book. Aug 20, Sanchita rated it it was amazing. This book is a keep for life.. A logical and a very scientific explaination of complex matters of life.
One can read and re-read to unfold the different layers of this book.
Great book One of the best books Takes you through the intricate details of the practice and also gives you a perspective of the different aspects which you would need to know. Jul 23, Gloria Ng rated it it was amazing Shelves: Very comprehensive for the beginning practitioner of Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism! However, I like The Winning Life: An Introduction to Buddhist Practice even more for the quickest "manual" to getting started in the practice right away.
Feb 13, Marko rated it liked it Shelves: First book I read about Buddhism and I think it handles well introducing the philosophy of Buddhism.
Has some interesting ideas and concepts in it. Good thing about the book is that it concentrates on the philosophy and it is not so much of a book that wants to convert someone. Includes some crap like world peace and so on, but the philosophy gives nice food for thought. Oct 17, Ankur Banerjee rated it liked it. While the book explains the ideology of Buddhism from a practical, modern perspective quite well, it is very dogmatic in its unwavering position that Nichiren Daoshonin's Buddhism is the only true religion.
This somehow turned me off from the book as a whole. Feb 27, Michael Obiora rated it liked it. If you read this, it means that you're open to philosophical stories, information, and ideas that may seem "far-fetched. Then at the end I could reflect and think about what struck a chord with me. Aug 30, Chelsea rated it really liked it. Great book, and a great introduction into the practice, though I caution taking your time, and taking notes. Even though I cannot get on board with the Ikeda-train, I'd easily recommend this to anyone interested.
They just don't have to read the last couple of chapters. Nov 02, Carolann rated it it was amazing. This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. To view it, click here.
