Please try again later. I enjoyed reading the Pool of Unease. I was traveling to Beijing and wanted a novel that was set in the city. This was a quick read but fun to look for the places mentioned in the story.

The police were in it up to their necks, the justice system had teeth but no backbone. If private detectives had not mushroomed in this dark and steamy environment, it would have been a socialist miracle. As an account of a city coping with growing pains, The Pool of Unease's descriptive passages offer unique snapshots for those with more than a passing interest in the psyche of China.
But fans of the suspense genre might find the pace too slow - there are no page-turning cliffhangers here.
Sampson might have done more to interweave Ballantyne and Song's paths. Any jam they get into is resolved too easily, leaving the reader with an uneasy feeling.
