Paredes did a complete job of research on the man and events behind one of the most famous border corridos ballads of all, about Gregorio Cortez. Paredes came from the area where Cortez lived. He interviewed people who knew Cortez and knew about what happened, and created an excellent picture of life for Hispanics in South Texas around the turn of the 20th Century a few years before the Mexican Revolution broke out.
It was a very creative idea to do a social science research project on a ballad and Paredes carried it off with style. It's a hard book to put down. Book is for a folklore class.
Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. I have mixed feelings. Living in Texas, and having spent considerable time in the Rio Grande Valley, and residing in central and southeast Texas for more than fifty years, I have come to understand the difference between a boundary and a border; a distinction our Congress does not appreciate. In the first ten percent of the book, Parades does a superb job defining the difference as it applies to Texas. This book is about the border and the everyday lives of the real people who live there.
Our politicians in Washington have treated the Rio Grande Valley solely as a boundary, ruining it with an ugly ten foot iron wall by creating a useless boundary. The story of Gregorio Cortez, the outlaw hero, is interesting and by contrasting probable fact with folklore in the border region, the book is a fair analysis of the local culture.
Ok, but not great. Texas Monthly rated the book on its ten most "Need to Read", list, but read some J. One person found this helpful.
Deftly woven into the story is a portrait of the border country and its history. Find a copy online Links to this item Table of contents. An enjoyable presentation of the legend and facts regarding Gregorio Cortez and his valiant life on the run. This work not only explains how the legend and corrido differ from the facts, but also attempts to explain why they differ.
Further, Paredes puts the corrido into a wider scope and analyzes its effects on the greater ballad scene as a whole. He also analyzes how it was affected by earlier ballads and styles.

He does so in a way, however, that makes the reader continuously question the relation between fact and legend. How did this fact lend itself into the legend? What affected the alterations? The latter half of the volume, containing Paredes' analysis of the larger corrido and ballad scene and its relation with El Corrido de Gregorio Cortez and its many variants is solid.
Although its language is mostly academic, it is an interesting and seemingly objective analysis that makes the reader ponder the workings of the oral story, one that is no longer in wide popularity today. While reading, the importance of this work should also be kept in mind.
The volume was written in the s, when Academia was usually exclusive to white males. Paredes, by presenting a detailed academic analysis of factual events that were usually portrayed through a racist lens, broke ground with this volume. Although it is dry at times, this is an exceptional read.
