I read all pages in a horrified, tense, thrilled sitting. Have you seen the TV series? If you are a lover of crime, or books that draw you in and simply will not let you rest until the final page is turned when you realise you used so much energy reading it you need to sleep a good day or two to catch up then this is seriously a book for you. I am wondering if all of her novels are this good, have any of you read some of her others? I look forward to reading it every day! Thank you for all your hard work.

I hope you are doing well and am keeping you in my thoughts and prayers. Thank you very much Jen thats really kind of you. Oh this sound brilliant and also original!! I might have to keep my eyes peeled for this in the library next time I go. Going to have to bump it up the list! I loved The Crimson Petal… I am very excited about it especially as Gillian Anderson is going to be in it as a right evil madame… literally.

Okay, I may have been done-in by my crush for Robson Green. They are indeed based on the books, there is a big set of repeats going on so I think I will have to play catch up on the series version too. In answer to your question, Simon, YES all her books are this good! Val McDermid is one of my favourite authors crime or otherwise. I have read all the books in this series with Tony Hill and Carol Jordan and have loved them all!

I have also read most of her standalones and they are just as brilliant! Does she write other books which arent crime? I had no idea, I would be interested in those too. I have a couple of standalone books to read now, very excited. Thanks for this review, Simon. It is a great reminder of what wonderful author Val McDermid is. I hope you turn to one of the books.

The only thing I did have a mini issue with was Robson Green being in my head reading Tony Hill as he plays him. That said I think he is a great choice. I liked the premise of a detective and profiler partnership, so started the first book in the series, The Mermaids Singing.

I admit, it was grifter than I bargained for. The level of sadistic violence in this book is not for the faint of heart, or, like me, those readers who have great difficulty getting imagery out of their head. As a result, I skimmed some of the torture scenes.

Having visited a museum of torture in Edinburgh, I unfortunately have seen some of the devices described in the book. I did find some of Carol Jordan's personal reactions to some situations annoying. I suppose it could be chalked up to investigative fatigue on her part. I look forward to seeing how she manages in the next book. My complaints of this book are small: The title has no connection, that I can see, to the story. Perhaps I'm being dense.

The two weasel coppers in the story don't really get their comeuppance. Maybe they will be addressed in the next book. Although, I think I'll read a lighter, less-gritty book before I dive back in to Tony and Carol's crime fighting. Kate Morton comes to mind This was a slog. All in all it was a decent book with a decent story. And, I often find Rankin tedious at times.

But this was the s. Hill and Inspector Jordan is great Getting up few minutes after going to bed because you can't sleep without finishing that book.. Having visited a museum of torture in Edinburgh, I unfortunately have seen some of the devices described in the book. Thanks for this review, Simon. This one was heavy on the grisly descriptions of torture, that I finally had to skip over them. Four men are brutaly slain.

I've a high tolerance for gore and twisted violence but the author crossed a line early on that had me nearly quit reading -- if out of principle. It was really hard to get into and I almost gave up but I'd heard good things. Not sure if I'll read another. My first Val McDermid novel knocked the proverbial socks off this Yank and has me wanting more. The detail, the story-layering, the psychological insight, and the cohesive plot told from multiple viewpoints had my head spinning! But not as in The Exorcist, I hasten to add.

I am well and truly hooked on McDermid's Tony and Carol partnership. The depth to which the author explicitly describes each detail of the story enhances the plot to which you are an intimate observer. You are front and center to all criminal gore as well as to the police frantically attempting to discover the tortuous killer. One person found this helpful. If torture and sadism are your cup of tea, this is the book for you. Though I love a good thriller and mystery, this story took me to a place that was too dark for my liking.

On the plus side, McDermid is a master of this genre, and an excellent writer. There were unique and interesting subplots that held my interest, but I did skip over a lot of the torture scenes.

I stopped reading almost immediately due to the grisly violence, but what prompted me to literally throw this paperback in the trash was the horrible torturing of an animal.

The Mermaids Singing has ratings and reviews. Mohammed said: That's how this novel was recommended for me; This series is perfect for fans o.

I'm an avid reader and love well-written mysteries, police procedurals, and many other genres. Ordinarily I donate my books after reading or pass along to friends, and throwing a a book away is foreign to me. Why someone who can write as well as Mcdermid would resort to this horrible gratuitous violence I have no idea.

A British police procedural. There have 4 murders - very similar - before the police admit that there may be a serial killer loose. The police department has decided to hire a profiler, Tony Hill. However the police are split in their acceptance of profiling. CArol Jordan, police inspector, is assigned to work with Dr. Tony Hill to see what he can offer the police in the process of solving the crime. The old-time detective leading the case will not admit that there may be a serial killer on the loose, preferring to let the public think it is merely a wave of unrelated murders.

The early conclusion by Tony Hill is that it certainly is the work of a serial killer further alienates him from the chief investigator. This one was heavy on the grisly descriptions of torture, that I finally had to skip over them. These descriptions seemed unnecessary to that degree. The character development was very poor, they seemed one dimensional and uninteresting.

The plot was built strictly on violence and little else. The redeeming feature was the surprise ending. See all reviews. Most recent customer reviews. Published 1 month ago. Published 2 months ago. Published 5 months ago. Published 6 months ago.
