Read with Evan as a home bible study, lots of good topics for the family. Dec 19, Rania Attafi rated it did not like it Shelves: Jul 22, Rachel rated it it was ok. A really cool story, but way too little narrative. Plus, author keeps jumping around in time. I already knew all the stories he mentioned, and I had even memorized portions of some. Definitely for kids, and for kids who haven't heard these stories their whole lives, and for kids who aren't already mission oriented.

Would be cool if author wrote another, separate book about his adventures with Hoops for Hope and in Africa. Nov 30, Blake Koppendrayer rated it it was amazing. This book is a book about "doing something bigger than yourself.

One of my favorite chapters was about how you have to reflect upon yourself and change yourself before you can go about changing other people.

Each chapter begins with a quote from a fomous person and is related to the chapter. The quote from my favorite chapter, Reflections, is a quote by Leo Tolstoy: The book focuses a lot on how even teens and kids can change the world. The last chapter is similar to The Great Commission in the Bible. One day we will be the presidents, the pastors, and the missionaries of the next generation. Slowly our generation will be taking over. This totally relates to me because I am a visionary and I have big dreams of changing the world.

He goes on to explain how God has worked through his life and the lives of many others and how he is working though "your" the readers life. He says on page that "God is creating world-changers from our generation in every corner of the globe. May 09, Kelly Hager rated it liked it. Gutwein is a high school student in Phoenix and he started Hoops for Hope. If you're unfamiliar with that, it's the group that raises money for children in Africa. Basically, you take 1, free throws in a row and people sponsor you and that money goes to Africa.

Africa's been devastated by the AIDS epidemic, but also by poverty. In the book, there are some statistics. I live paycheck to paycheck, but according to a gl Gutwein is a high school student in Phoenix and he started Hoops for Hope. Most of this book is how Gutwein started Hoops for Hope--he saw a video about a young girl a girl his age, in fact in Africa, who lived in a small hut with her great-grandmother her parents and other relatives died of AIDS.

He knew he wanted to make a difference, but he didn't know how. After asking family and friends and prayer , he decided to start Hoops for Hope and use his passion for basketball to make a difference. But the rest of this book is how the rest of us can do the same--find our passion and use it to make a difference in the world. At the end of each chapter, there's some scripture and also questions that you can answer to help you determine exactly how to make a difference.

It's written for teenagers, so the language is very simple and accessible. I'd recommend this to teenagers, and hopefully this will help everyone want to make a difference. May 23, Maddie rated it it was amazing. I have just recently finished the book Take Your Best Shot. This book had a lot of text to world connections. For example, Austin goes to Africa and helps raise money for the orphans by shooting hoops.

It sound kind of silly to shoot hoops to raise money but it really worked for Austin.

He got just about most of the world to help him raise money. His goal, 1, shots. This is a text to world connection because many places in the world have poverty and homeless children. Austin saw a video of a little girl and she had lost her whole entire family to a earthquake.

For example, Austin set a goal that he could shoot 1, shots and for every shot, he would raise money to donate. I think that this is a very great idea. If you see something that is so sad you cant explain how you feel, you CAN do something. This book has really inspired me. Then when i got to the end, I saw his e-mail address.

I thought that i might give him a shout out, But I kind of knew that he would be way to busy to reply. Turns out he wasn't! He e-mailed me back within the very next day! If you have any questions or comments, you should e-mail him. Dec 29, Jill Williamson rated it it was amazing. What would happen if you decided to change the world?

Praise the Lord for a young man who wasn't willing to say, "No. I am honored to live on earth with such a courageous young man. In this book he tells his story. How it started, what he was thinking, the doubts and fears he had, and how God took his small effort and multiplied it again and again. God designed you for a purpose. For a 9-year-old boy now 16 to make such a difference in a country thousands of miles away We never know where they will lead.
