Not a bad acheivement for a brief book. This book allows the reader to brush up on English history with short posts of key events and political leaders. What would make this even better would be a companion work with cultural history, or if cultural leaders had been included. Shakespeare hasn't been England's only contribution to the arts.

I really appreciated a condensed version of English history. It was still hard to keep track of lineage and the throne.

But history may just be that complicated. Would have liked the book to go further into the 20th century. Easy and pleasant narrative recounting the full history of the motherland. This book seems to sort of put many of the pieces together, but with very little "extras". The parts that I find easiest to read are ones I know more about If you are interested in the royal families, I have been also reading "the Illustrated Encyclopedia of Royal Britain". So, as far as this book goes, it is a very short description in one-page chapters of different events in England in chronological order.

I'm glad I got this book. If you ever wanted a very consise book that gives you a quick look at the history of Britain, this is it. I wish I'd been given this to read in secondary school, instead of two years of The Treaty of Versailles. Lively, exciting, full of great stories and humorous asides, this book looks at the key events in British history, covering all the important dates, people and events.
