Elements of computational statistics. Chapter 5 is also fairly relevant conceptually to some of my current research, but didn't contribute a lot of new concrete knowledge. I'm skeptical of Chapter 4 - the modeling seems sound, but I deeply question the wisdom of encouraging C for application work. But it isn't targeted at me - this book is more targeted at social scientists who I really liked the first 3 chapters of this book - they are pretty high-level, but do a good job of laying paradigmatic groundwork for computational modeling.
