H is for Homicide: A Kinsey Millhone Mystery (Kinsey Millhone Alphabet series Book 8)

Kinsey's enforced overnight stay in the police 'tank' is interrupted by Lieutenant Dolan, who has a job offer for her: Raymond is the head of a huge insurance fraud gang and the police want Kinsey to use her new position as Bibianna's confidante to get the evidence they need; there seems to be a leak somewhere in the police department and they need someone unconnected they can trust to bring Raymond to justice.

Kinsey withdraws her initial gut refusal when Dolan tells her Raymond killed Parnell, but they have been stalling the murder investigation in order not to jeopardize the longstanding fraud case. Kinsey agrees to help out of a sense of duty to Parnell, but the police plan to have Kinsey wired for her own protection goes awry and she is left to fend for herself. Thus begins a dangerous and stifling few days for Kinsey, undercover and up to her neck in a criminal ring headed by a deluded killer.

Raymond effectively keeps both Kinsey and Bibianna under house arrest in Los Angeles, with the aid of his second in command, Luis. Raymond can't accept Bibianna's rejection of him and is determined to force her into marriage. The snag in the plan, which Bibianna doesn't dare confess, is that she has actually just married Tate. Tensions run high, while Kinsey learns much about the car insurance fraud business, keeps her eyes open, and eventually establishes the leak is a clerk at the County Sheriff's office, whose father is a crooked doctor heavily involved in Raymond's ring.

Matters come to a head when Bibianna escapes, and is pursued almost to her death by one of Raymond's henchmen. Visiting her in hospital, the doctor inadvertently lets slip to Raymond that Bibianna's next of kin is her husband, Jimmy Tate. Enraged, Raymond shoots Jimmy.

I have read all of the books before this in the series and have to say this is my least favorite. The story line seemed disjointed and not all that compelling to read. Took me a long time to finish. It just stopped at this odd rush at the end with no sense of real ending. Like the pages needed were done and time to bring to close.

This book went very fast for me as compared to the other books. I think because the story is confined to such a narrow point once Kinsey goes undercover. Even though the story spans from Santa Theresa to Los Angeles, Grafton does a fantastic job of making you feel just as trapped and confined in the environment as Kinsey is with her precarious situation. I think some of the appreciation also must go to Judy Kaye and her narration.

She emotes and helps the reader build the world in their head. The story moves at a very quick pace and the action scenes convey a profound sense of tension of excitement.

I also liked the integration of more of Lt. One person found this helpful. What can you say about Sue Grafton other than she is a great mystery writer. Kinsey Milhone is an ex-cop and has her own detective agency and never much of a sex life if that what your looking for, go elsewhere. This is a traditional gumshoe story with action and danger for our heroine. After some spotty success writing books, Grafton changed to writing screenplays for TV and movies. With the success of her first Alphabet series book ' A is for Alibi' in it has continued to date. I first discovered her books when I came across 'G is for Gumshoe' pub in a recycle center in , I proceeded to local bookstores and Amazon to acquire all of this series up until the current at the time 'O is For Outlaw'.

It's always great when you come across a great series in progress as it's a joy just reading book after book from a great writer. Much like 'binge watching TV series on Netflix nowadays. Only problem with an ongoing series is waiting for the next book. Grafton has done only a couple of yearly books and mostly every other year since 'P is for Peril' in It is now up to just plain 'X' in and will end with 'Z is for Zero'. Part of the lure of a series is how the author keeps that same characters and locale, yet bings something fresh and new into the story.

While this is a good story, and very well written as is usual - I found that I was immersed in a world that I did not like. A very odd situation, not liking anything about what is going on in the story, but driving myself to finish. I hope I will enjoy the next in the series. I've read or listened to most all of the books before.

Now, I decided, especially with Amazon offering the Kindle versions on sale, to read them in order. This one was so unlike any of the others that I couldn't come to grips with it. It was just OK. Probably wouldn't be likely to reread it, unlike some of her other books. This is the second time I read this about 15 years ago.

Kinsey does something to an officer that is very out of character and I will never figure out why. If anyone can tell me please do so. Never knew much about insurance fraud and it sounded boring. In fact the ending was quite exciting and shocking with an ending you'll never see coming.

Mass Market Paperback Verified Purchase. I had begun reading this series years ago and them had gone in other directions for a few years. I picked up one of the last books I had on my shelf, "K" I believe and reread it. I was hooked again and have started ordering the books that came out while I was busy with other things. They are even better than I remembered and this time, I will follow them until the very sad day that "Z" comes out. Thank you, Sue Grafton, for such pleasure in your superbly crafted mysteries!
