The entire theft plot seemed a little far-fetched but still an interesting way to get Bennet and Darcy together in the end. I loved this rewriting: Feb 15, Zee Monodee rated it it was ok Shelves: Sadly, was too slow for me, and the whole 'written in present tense' thing made it very difficult to get lost into the book.

Plus all the names being bandied about at the start didn't allow me to connect with the characters, so I found myself more confused than anything while reading this. Nov 16, Holly rated it really liked it Shelves: Bennet Bethle and two of his brothers, John and Lydon, work at the Longbourn museum, where they solicit donations from wealthy patrons. Bennet views much of his job through a lense of amusement, but even he can see how quickly Bingley and John become smitten with one another. Messina does a good job of capturing the essence of these characters in Bennet, John, Darcy, and more.

The story hits all the essential plot points of the original without ever getting stagnant or dull; indeed, this retelling breaths a new kind of life into a much-loved classic. Review originally written for San Francisco Book Review. Oct 23, Katy Noyes rated it really liked it Shelves: Now - the genders of Pride and Prejudice iconic characters are changing.

Yes, Darcy is now a rich woman, and Bennett not Elizabeth a working man. My favourite book, I know it back to front, can quote it with ease - not every adaptation gets my seal of approval. So this both intrigued and worried me. I have given it a good rating though, as you can see. So yes, I liked it. When an author places the story in a new setting here contemporary New York , making changes can suit the new time and place.

I really enjoyed seeing how Messina made the changes to totally reverse the genders - a lot had to change for it to work. And on the whole, I thought she managed it very successfully. The five sisters aren't all present, though Bennett does have multiple brothers an older with similar traits to Jane, a younger who is of course Lydia. Mrs Bennett becomes his boss, still annoyingly insufferable and overwrought at times, but with a streak of meanness in him that's hilarious mostly centring on his employees' benefits at the museum cafe.

Bennett, being a modern man, works for a living, as an advertising man in a museum, seeking new clients. And it is their constant search for new benefactors that starts off the novel, with the unforgettable line: So to Darcy then, here her first name. Again, I really liked her. Bennett is a affable and smart young man.

I never found Darcy as rude and pompous as her namesake original, but I did all the way through have terrible trouble picturing the new incarnations in anything other than period costume and their original genders. I had to force myself to remember who they are in this book. But that's just my familiarity with Austen's work struggling against Messina's. It was lovely to follow the familiar plot along and see how Messina made changes that incorporated the original's words and story, but altered them for the modern world and alternate genders.

I got caught up in the faltering love story and my favourite characters and scenes a proposal, Mr Collins' equivalent, Lady Catherine is still there, the trip to Pemberley.

I didn't feel my love for Austen spoiled at all by a new take on her work, I appreciated the time and effort the author has taken to consider how to update but still pay tribute to her predecessor and throughly enjoyed a fresh look at how Austen is still relevant to today's world of love and relationships. Every aspect of the original is carefully translated into 21st century New York City. Characters, who in the original might remark on the food, are now Instagramming their dinners. Where the original Darcy might have written letters, now she is emailing. Collins, the parson of the original story, is now Collin Parsons the gay nephew of Catherine deBourgh. Bennett who was obsessed with suitors who had considerable money becomes Mr. Meryton who is constantly trying to find wealthy heiresses to donate funding for the Longbourn museum.

Lynn was able to change the genders of most of the characters and still stay true to the sentiments of the original novel. The style of narration throughout the novel was more telling what was happening than showing it, and it had a very 18th century vibe, which felt a bit disjointed.

Oct 24, Marissa rated it really liked it Shelves: This novel took place in present day Queens and Manhattan!! The main characters in this novel were Bennet Bethle and Darcy Fitzwilliam. Darcy Fitzwilliam has had everything given to her since birth. But over the course of dinner parties and impromptu visits both Darcy and Bennet begin to change. Or will they succumb to their different stations in life and forget that each other exist?

This was exactly like the Pride and Prejudice movie Keira Knightley starred in but at the same time completely different! For the people that know the original story and movie the characters and situations draw awesome parallels to this novel. This story was told in third person point of view. It had about the same expansive vocabulary as the original story did. The dialogue was reminiscent of the way they talked in the Keira Knightley movie but with some present day slang thrown in.

The cover is playful and whimsical which also comes in spades within the story! Just as the author took the characters and spun them, she also did so to the cover and I like that modern day things were thrown in. This was such a fun read! The characters were over the top but definitely lovable!! If you are in the mood for a fresh new take on a classical novel then come check out Prejudice and Pride!!!!

Review first posted on my blog 'A Spoonful of Happy Endings': Meryton is always on the look-out for people to help fund the museum, including young and rich socialites who can organise events and help spread the word. So when heiress Charlotte Bingston, known to her friends as Bingley, comes to town, Mr. Meryton is set on John and Bennet charming her to invest some of her money in the museum. However, Charlotte's best friend Darcy Fitzwilliam isn't amused by the brothers and particularly their boss, and their acquaintance leads to quite a bit more than both parties initially expected As a big Jane Austen fan I was really curious to check out Lynn Messina's 'Prejudice and Pride', which is not only a modern-day retelling of Austen's classic novel set in New York City, but also one in which the genders are swapped.

I loved looking for the differences and similarities with the original novel and discovering what the author had decided to change or even do completely different. We've got a male Elizabeth and a female Mr.

Highlights from 2017

Darcy in the form of Bennet and Darcy, which I thought was great. I also loved what the author decided to do with Mrs. Bennet in the form of Mr. Meryton, younger brother Lydon as the infamous Lydia, and Darcy's gay cousin Collin, who was quite fabulous and a great new interpretation of the character in my opinion! I do have to admit I missed the sparks between Darcy and Bennet; the chemistry between the two of them unfortunately wasn't really there for me, which is quite an important aspect of this romance story. However, don't get me wrong, I did really enjoy this Austen adaptation and my first gender-swap retelling and definitely recommend it to any Austen fans out there.

Feb 19, Catherine rated it really liked it. I really enjoyed this. Gender bending and updating the setting at the same time is not the easiest thing to pull off, but Lynn Messina did so admirably. The changes to professions fit not only the original characters, but also a modern setting. Nov 24, Jennifer rated it it was ok. I liked the story. The updated version of the familiar tale was interesting and well done. My two biggest problems were the dialogue and the pacing. In some places, the dialogue from the original was kept with slight tweaks.

I don't think it fit very well with the new dialogue used in this book. I would have preferred to have all new to fit with the modern tale. The pacing also bothered me.
