You can actually listen without hearing. There are several reasons for this. If you are planning your response while the other person is talking. Hearing is when you allow their words to go into your heart. You can listen without hearing, but you can't hear without listening. They both have.
Does it mean the same as "turn a blind eye" or "turn a deaf ear"? All of those and other euphemisms like them mean: What does this statement mean to you?
What does "he is a bit of a closed book" mean? What does the saying "If a politician's lips are moving, he or she is lying" mean? Then there is selective hearing.
This occurs when you only hear part of what the other person is saying. You literally select just those things you either want to hear or agree with. Often, people aren't aware how much they don't hear what is being said. They may even believe they are listening carefully. Regardless of why someone doesn't accurately hear what another person is saying, the result is the same: To make it yet more challenging, even when listening intently, you tend to filter what someone is saying through your own biases. You may assume you know what someone means because you jump to conclusions before they finish talking.
You then erroneously believe you know what the other person means or how they feel. As a result, you can then formulate opinions about the other person that are not based on reality. This creates lots of stress, if not anger, between the parties involved. In order to accurately hear what someone is saying to you, you have to endeavor to put yourself in their position and try to see things from their point of view. This doesn't mean you have to agree with them.
It does mean you strive to objectively understand what they are attempting to convey. If you accurately hear what someone else is saying, but they are not saying what they mean, it's impossible to have any meaningful communication.
When you speak, don't expect others to be able to read your thoughts. Say what's on your mind. Hearing takes more energy than time. You absorb them the way you absorb a meal.
It becomes part of you—maybe a small part, maybe a large part, but a part nonetheless. The ultimate choice remains yours.
The son who does not has not heard. To HEAR something is more a biological function of your brain processing sound waves that fall on your ears. Two sons listen to their dad tell them to pick up their rooms. But in order to hear what the other person is saying, you have to stop thinking about anything else and focus your attention on what is being said. Hearing takes us far deeper than listening.
You decide who to listen to and who to hear. Becoming a better listener will involve more of your time. Becoming better at hearing others will involve more of your heart.
