My Nose Is Growing Old - Poem by Richard Brautigan

Sing and dance together and be joyous, But let each one of you be alone, Even as the strings of a lute are alone Though they quiver with the same music. And stand together Yet not too near together: Loving does not at first mean merging, surrendering, and uniting with another person — it is high inducement for the individual to ripen, to become something in himself, to become world, to become world in himself for the sake of another person; it is a great, demanding claim on him, something that chooses and calls him to vast distances… Once the realization is accepted that even between the closest people infinite distances exist, a marvelous living side-by-side can grow up for them, if they succeed in loving the expanse between them, which gives them the possibility of seeing each other as a whole and before an immense sky.

Lawrence And man and woman are like the earth, that brings forth flowers in Summer, and love, but underneath is rock.

I love you not only for what you have made of yourself but for what you are making of me. I love you because you have done more than any creed could have done to make me good, and more than any fate could have done to make me happy.

Editorial Reviews

You have done it without a touch, without a word Without a sign. You have done it by being yourself.

Famous Poems

Sonnet XVII — by Pablo Neruda I do not love you as if you were the salt-rose, or topaz, or the arrow of carnations the fire shoots off. I love you straightforwardly, without complexities or pride; so I love you because I know no other way than this: Before they began their journey they share their expectations as follows: There will be days my friend, when one will want to walk along the mountain path, whilst the other may prefer the valley, but we will come together at the end of the day and share our experiences.
