THE ANNOTATED CURSE OF THE MINOTAUR: A Tale of Ancient Greece

A very well-written look at Zeus through the ages. Tom Stone's 22 years in Greece were well spent and his love of Greek mythology shows through in his writing.

As the title implies, we follow the origins of Zeus as a amorphous deity of the proto-Greeks to his establishment both literally and historically as the head of a new Greek pantheon. In National Geographic style, Stone weaves his own experiences in Greece along with the historical Minoan religion of the Mother Goddess and coming of the more violent Mycenaeans, and then the mythical saga of Zeus' rise to power and how events in real life in particular the eruption of Mt Thera, Troy, and so on fostered the wonderful stories we have today.

He then goes into Classical and Hellenic Greece as the established religion of Zeus becomes norm and Zeus himself fades even at the height of his power.

Customer reviews

It's a refreshing break from the old disjointed tales of Greek Mythology and the writing style makes Stone's work easy to follow, yet very informative I've read it twice and still getting something new with the third reading. This book will give you a new understanding of Zeus and how the ancient Greeks saw him.

Stone has an excellent way of illustrating history using a sort of narrative. He reveals the historical reality that influenced the Greek myths so near and dear to our hearts the Minotaur, the Flood and Deucalion, etc. Stone's way of writing is informative and entertaining and serves as an excellent source of inspiration for further study.
