Kept me guessing and intrigued.

THE STERLING INHERITANCE

Thank you MIchael for a good new read! One person found this helpful. I thought I'd read enough of this book in the "Look Inside" feature to be safe in ordering a copy. Reading just a bit more of this cutesy-dialogue laden text convinced me otherwise. Here are some samples, starting on page The speaker is Mother, the narrator, her son, replies. Don't make your poor old mother have to worry about you or I'll have to avenge you. It could get ugly.

I love you, son. I just had my nails done. Need to check on the business angle and look up Malcolm Sterling. Or am I expected to do all the work around here myself? I have it on good authority that I was born premature. I'm fairly certain I was trying to make a break for it. I couldn't face another pages of this drivel. Mike Siverling's first novel is solid. I am surprised it isn't a TV show yet because the strength of the characters would be fun for good actors. However, if Mike would only write the amazing Traveller novels he was born to create This is a funny series. The book was delivered quickly and is a good read.

I hope he writes another. Russian expatriate Katerina Sterling hires the Midnight Detective Agency to find her missing husband, financial investor Anthony. His mom Victoria, owner of the private sleuth company, assigns the search to her son part-time investigator Jason Wilder. The relatively easy job turns ugly when Anthony pulls out a gun on Jason, who disarms the man. The River City police arrive almost immediately and quickly handcuff Jason until he is able to clear things up. Anthony, insisting someone wants to kill him, is accused of murder until he too is found dead.

Jason makes inquiries into the deaths thinking in terms of the Russian connection or the wealthy Sterling link as best bets. As Jason checks into the ties to the deceased, he is attracted to Anthony's sister Janice and starts thinking with his wrong head. Thank goodness Mommy Dearest would never let any harm come to her boy as she would not want to think she wasted nine hours in labor, but will Queen Victoria be able to get Anthony to look at the gig a bit differently.

Readers will enjoy this urban Noir starring a host of delightful characters. The relationships that Jason has fostered including the one with his dynamic mother are off beat, quirky and it is fun to observe the give and take. In many ways, Victoria steals the show with her cynical love for her son.

Working with the other members of the Midnight Investigative Agency headed by his mother , Wilder uncovers hints of attempted arson, booby-traps, the Russian mafia, and a beautiful woman who just might be the real killer after all. Wild Bill Wilder has since died, and Mom is running the detective agency they had founded with a loving but definitely iron hand. The Sterling Inheritance 3. Private investigator Jason Wilder has the toughest boss in River City: Mickey rated it really liked it Jun 25,

The case is well written and clever, but it is the cast that explains why Mike Siverling won the St. It's an ordinary missing person case--a woman reported her husband missing--and private detective Jason Wilder could have solved it in his sleep. But when the missing man tries to shoot him, complains that 'they' were going to kill him, and then turns up to be the lead suspect in a murder case, Wilder figures that this might be more than a run-of-the-mill missing person case after all.

Working with the other members of the Midnight Investigative Agency headed by his mother , Wilder uncovers hints of attempted arson, booby-traps, the Russian mafia, and a beautiful woman who just might be the real killer after all. Author Michael Silverling's strong writing kept me involved with the plot. To ask other readers questions about The Sterling Inheritance , please sign up. This book is not yet featured on Listopia. Sep 03, LJ rated it liked it Shelves: When he does, Sterling tries to shoot him. Sterling is then arrested for murder of a man found in the dumpster behind the theatre owned by Sterling and his sister. But when Sterling claims his sister is the actual killer and he then disappears, it clear things are not as they seem. The plot is a bit weak and way too much attention was spent on telling us where Jason parked his car. But the relationship between Jason and his mother, who owns the detective agency, is delightful and characterized by quips reminiscent of the 20s.

It's a delightful first book and I am looking forward to the next one. Dec 07, Alissa rated it it was ok Shelves: Jason is a young PI in the fictional River City, Ca, so much time is spent on describing River City and it's wasted since it's a fictional town. As for the genre, Jason is a younger PI so might appeal to 20 somethings.

The mystery has a surprise to me killer and wraps up rather neatly without a lot of violence or build up. Characterization of Jason's mom owner of the PI agency is vivid and detailed but Jason lacks depth. Reviews said this is first of a series so it'd be interesting to see ho Jason is a young PI in the fictional River City, Ca, so much time is spent on describing River City and it's wasted since it's a fictional town.

Jan 26, Grey rated it it was ok Shelves: The main character of this PI story tries a bit too hard to be funny and that didn't work for me. He's also bullied and pushed around by his mom, the head of the agency he works for. None of the story rang true. I give it two stars instead of one because it wasn't terrible, but it was just too predictable. Oct 04, Viccy rated it liked it. Jason Wilder works for a living: This was a fun read, not too deep, lots of action.
