Corina Bomann, Alison Layland - translator Narrated by: Despite the many issues that I had with this book, Daughters of the River Huong was still a great read. There were times in the book when the author painted brilliant pictures of the surroundings in the book and I thought there was excellent attention to detail. I enjoyed the book and rec Daughters of the River Huong that spanned multiple generations and embraced the timelessness of a culture that faced loss and tragedy with dignity and grace. Forced to flee her own town, she establishes a new identity in the home of her aunt. I downloaded this book almost two years ago and finally got around to reading it. Once I came home I became very interested in Asian history especially Vietnam.
This book tells the story of a young girl who use to paddle across the perfume river with passengers for some money. One day she meets a young Royal Man who then she became one of his concubines. The story takes off from there about the history of those times French Occupation to her only real love in her life. She ends up in Paris and eventually returns home. Saigon Falls, she ends up as a refugee in the Midwest and eventually gets educated and starts a new life.
Eventually she goes back to Vietnam to remember all her good days and bad times including the history of her family.
The book is very touching and has lots of human emotions and reflections on ones life journey. Well worth the read. One person found this helpful. I have an significant interest in the country that is Vietnam with its rich 3, year history. I have done research on the American War as the Vietnamese call it so I was somewhat familiar with the modern-day pre- and post-war history and geography, particularly with regard to the war. The writing in this book is very descriptive, surreal at times, and delightfully detailed.
There is a lot of sadness. There is a lot of joy. But the underlying themes of love, loss, separation, loyalty and determination reach through the ages. I enjoyed it immensely and have recommended to Vietnamese and American friends of mine. This amazing memoir, I call it amazing because it is the first memoir I have read of Vietnam before, during, and after the war, from the perspective of a woman affected by the country's political changes.
Although, there is no mention of the Vietnam War, I assuming this is because the narrator lived in Saigon and was protected by her parents from any mention of war, the book gives an incredible look at how life changes within the generations. Uyen's great grandmother was a concubine, her grandmother a person of means until they loose their status due to the French control of Indochina Vietnam. Uyen mother and father are hardworking but underpaid professionals who try to give Uyen and her two younger siblings everything they can afford for a life that will, hopefully, be somewhat better than the life the family is currently living.
The family had to move from their comfortable surroundings in a town called Hue to the bustling city of Saigon due to the father's occupation.
I won't give too much away, but Uyen and her family, minus her strong-willed grandmother, flee Saigon from the Vietcong to American where Uyen marries an American due to obligations that helped her to escape Vietnam and becomes an attorney. She lives the American dream but is unable to escape her past: I recommend reading this book to the readers who like a different perspective of Vietnam that is not about the war, but about the inhabitants who were and continue to be affected by a changing government they ultimately have no control over.
