De discipline moet echter niet enkel opnieuw gelanceerd worden omdat ze verdwijnt uit de theologische opleidingen, ze moet ook omgaan met nieuwe uitdagingen en ontwikkelingen, waarbij de interreligieuze dialoog wellicht de meest prangende is. Hij combineert bovendien op aanbevelingswaardige manier zijn confessionele identiteit met aandacht voor theologen van andere tradities. Deze oecumenische openheid is ontegensprekelijk een van de sterktes van zijn bijdrage. Hij slaagt er daarbij in om de lezer doorheen de besproken themata te wijzen op het belang voor FT.
