As a consultant continuously looking for tools to improve my practice, I recently had an opportunity to apply and recommend Karen Valencic's book on Spiral Impact to a CEO of a mid size corporation. Talking the talk of being a learning organization and creating an environment where people learn from their mistakes, "Russ" invited me in to observe a management meeting. His staff had told me privately that Russ "beat" people up when a mistake was made.

In this meeting, I observed first hand this disconnect from his words to his actions. Remembering Karen's book, I spiral impacted what I was witnessing and looked at Russ with "soft eyes. He said, as he'd said before, that he wanted to create an environment of open communication. Realizing that Russ needed support and a structure, I asked him if I could share a framework that may help him "in the moment" of giving feedback. Sharing Spiral Impact specifically around holding to intention, he immediately "got it.

Thank you, Karen, for writing a book where within minutes one can walk aways with gems, such as soft eyes, providing support for consultants as well as tools to support our clients as well. Spiral Impact is a must for coaches and their clients!
