He knew that he would get stronger and faster, but he was not aware of all of the terrible side effects. He told the story in a way that you felt you were there right alongside Mick.

Like me, he has red hair, only his was long and reached his shoulders. He wore muscle T-shirts that showed his tattoos—on one shoulder a dragon, on the other a snake. But there was one last thing that absolutely sealed the deal—my dad was a star. Our den proved it. Two walls were covered with framed newspaper articles. It was the headlines of those articles that told his story.

If readers are looking for an uplifting, sports hero ending, they'll be disappointed. A bit of a downer, the ending is as raw and real as the rest of the novel. Families can talk about steroid use. Given the incredible pressure many kids feel to excel in sports at an early age, is the temptation to take steroids understandable?
