The humor and situations were well done and added to the plot. In this novel there is too much humor for the sake of humor and very little intelligent plot flow. A few descriptive words would work better rather than to confuse the reader by trying for constant humor. For example, Hemitage and Wit are seeking a butcher. They come to a valley and this is the sight that greets them: Probably an Old Testament battle. Great forces had been unleashed and thine enemies had been well and truly scattered.
The butcher's enemies were scattered everywhere. Hermitage wondered for a moment why this man had become a butcher as it looked like he wasn't very good at it. On the other hand it may have been his only choice. Why not just say, "The carcases of dead pigs littered the valley. In this novel Brother Hermitage just seems to go along with a flow that ultimately leads to a resolution of the problems which he encounters as a result of idiocy and brutality. There are some very humorous lines and situations in this novel but there is also too much in the way of endless convoluted arguments that just leave the reader frustrated with a desire to see the story move along.
The murder mystery ends about one quarter of the way into the book. Then it is just a collection of everyone wanting to kill, maim or torture everyone else and how Wit and Brother Hermitage go about trying to avoid that. It became a bit of a chore to read after awhile. One person found this helpful 2 people found this helpful.
Initially, Brother Hermitage was the proverbial fish out of water. In his opening saga he was well meaning and thoughtful andthatwas it. Itb was Wat he started his coming out of his shell. In this third instalment, Brother Armitage is much more the thoughtful solver of crimes. Often surprising himself and Wat, Hermitage led the way in the investigations. Though not yet a Brother Cadfael or Brother Athelstan, he is getting there.
He is sorting out what is appropriate and what isn't, often surprising Wat with his self reliance. The killer did come from left field but paying attention to the narrative, you could follow Hermitage's thoughts on his investigation.. Well spiced with humour but the story and character development are what brings you in.

Here we are in or so traveling with a woman apprentice, 'there is no such thing! Throw in three religious Castigators, a giant blob of evil with his minions, a butcher aka delineator of hot loins, a wicked witches coven of weavers and Good fun all around, except for those in the wrong place at the definitely wrong time. Actually violence while glaringly indicated with unwavering constancy is seldom actually apparent. This is fun reading while your wait for a haircut or a delayed flight. How does the author come up with this stuff unless he talks to a lot of folk that I know. Really cannot say too much more other than I purchased this series of books for my husband who never picks out his own books!
He said these were probably his favorite books now and he is anxiously awaiting the opportunity to read more about the antics of Brother Hermitage and Wat the weaver. What parts I have read are laugh-out-loud funny. If you are looking for historical fiction with a good dose of humor, these are your books What's not to like? Howard of Warwick's writing has definitely improved as his Brother Hermitage series has progressed. The murder mystery that begins this story ends up going in a completely unexpected direction, then there is another death that seems to defy all logical explanation.
Why is the church so interested in the case? Did the Weaver's Guild order an execution? Will Hermitage's immortal soul be placed in jeopardy by a pornographic tapestry?
Plenty of medieval misdirection and humor doesn't prevent Hermitage from plucking the truth from the Tapestry of Death. Well, it wasn't really like that There's plenty of ranking on Normans and Nobility plus an extra dose of the hilarious bizarreness that characterizes Howard of Warwick work. His work has definitely reached an excellent level in this and the Garderobe of Death. This is the 3rd book in the series that I have read. The Tapestry of Death had its moments but the ending killed it for me. However I will try the next book in the series just to see how far fetched the series will go.
