Nowadays with the fame of Jane Austen worldwide it seems hard to believe that in her own lifetime this was the only book that brought her any real success. And what a book it is. For the Bennet family, with five daughters, and the family estate entailed so it is imperative that at least one or more of the girls makes a good match in the marriage market, so as to support the rest of the family when Mr Bennet dies, and Mrs Bennet is certainly set on doing all that she can to assist in this.

Thus, when Mr Bingley rents a house so all the women with eligible daughters in the area make a bee-line straight for him, even more so when he is accompanied by Mr Darcy, who is even wealthier, and also single. Of course, as we all know Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy are the main stars of the book, but there are a number of memorable characters here such as Mrs Bennet, the nefarious George Wickham, and William Collins, who would marry any woman who says yes, to name but a few.

With this in mind, and if like me you are male but have so far avoided this book, then please read it, there is so much to enjoy and think about here. Audio CD Verified Purchase. The adaptor had three hours to get the story in. I have heard two hour radio adaptations produced by American theatre companies make a better fist of this in less than two, actually.

I was so disappointed, having the missed the first BBC episode when it aired on radio and had to wait ages for the cd issue.

I have no problem with the performances. Mr Darcy has a particularly sexy voice! Elizabeth is spot on.

And Amanda Root, an old favourite, is a welcome addition as the narrator. She does it so well. Mrs Bennett, too, is a delight. But to play hard and fast with the material, add dialogue bearing no resemblance to the original, and omit key speeches I utterly concur with Angela Lovelace's comments on the muffed proposal speech - bravo Angela , when the source material is so superlative, is nothing short of a sacrilege. I know Hollywood took liberties with the plot in the old 40's film adaptation.

You could get away with it then. I could even forgive the liberties taken, if the BBC had had less time to adapt the novel. They could have got pretty much the entire novel in. Instead, we get filler. Never been so disappointed in all my life. Shorter, but superior available on Amazon. They are performed live and are a lot of fun. There is another U. They prove the job can be done perfectly well if the source material is given the respect it deserves.

First of all, the Book itself is beautifully presented, I love the "Penguin Classics" collection and have quite a few of them, I am a little OCD so it's nice that they all fit together on the shelves. I won't review the story, as that is for the reader to find out. However I will say that Jane Austen's portrayal of early nineteenth century Society is wonderful to read, I adore Elizabeth, and especially how she is quite set apart in her ideals from other Women of that time.

The book is a delight to read, I have tried to limit it to lunchtimes in work to make it last, and find myself excited to read the next part. One person found this helpful.

I didn't expect to enjoy this nearly as much as I did. I now understand why Austen is so infamous.

Her writing is witty, clever and beautiful. As a reader to whom classics were foreign, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and read it in two days. This far outstripped my expectations and has encouraged me to read more classical literature. The characters are depicted with great detail, and they display sets of features usual to average everyday people we meet in our lives. This is what you encounter not very often in the novels, and i liked it.

But still, i give the most praise to the style, to the intricate humor of the author. The humor which doesn't make you laugh your whatever off, but grants you a calm, wide and lasting smile. What i didn't like is the difficult archaic spoken and narrative language used throughout the book. Fast shipping and my daughter loves the book. One person found this helpful. This is a beautiful book with lovely illustrations, but it is not a standard size.

It is about twice the size of a regular paperback, although it isn't very thick. The print is also quite small and somewhat difficult to read. Each page has two columns of print. It is a nice collector's piece, but not something you would want to throw in your bag to take to the beach.

I loved the BBC video and wanted to learn more about that time period, and how well the video adhered to the book. The book was written in that time period so it was accurate as to how people acted, dressed, their morals and what was required of them socially. It's a good read and re-read.

I'd recommend it to anyone who like to know how people lived in the nineteenth century. I love Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, but did not particularly like the illustrated format of this book. It was much larger than I expected included the font size. I did not feel like it was very practical, however the illustrations were nice to look at and the cover is appealing. The illustrater, Hugh Thomson, lived from to His illustrations definitely give the book an old-world feel.
