Thoughts For Young Men

We must heed the warning: Ryle has a great closing section on the importance of prayer. In Ryle's book we see desperation and a real faith based pursuit of holiness. May we young men take heed! Every single child, boy, and man should read this book. Although it says "young men" I truly believe that this book is beneficial for every age. It is a short book but it is a very dense read. I recommend reading this book with pens, highlighters, and a notebook nearby. This is the type of book that has the potential to change this generation. If young men took this book and ran with it, our world would look like a different place.

The book contains 4 chapters that are likely transcriptions of 4 related sermons or messages on the importance of younger men adopting and living a God-honoring lifestyle sooner rather than later. Each message challenges men of college age to late-twenties to abandon "sowing their wild oats" for a life of purity and Christian discipline. Our discussion of this book over 4 or 5 weekly studies engendered some serious but lively discussions on the differences between what the World calls a "good" life and the behaviors that our society tolerates today, in contrast to what the Word of God commands for Followers of the Way.

There are many challenging statements in these chapters, some of which may sound "Puritanical" or "judgmental" at first, but are quickly revealed to come directly from Scripture. If your church is not accustomed to hearing the Gospel proclaimed boldly, without apology, this will be a tough slog for many of you; but if you're willing to be challenged, and to face your own shortcomings honestly, without guilt, these teachings will prove very valuable to you and the younger men in your life. Some sections will seem repetitive at first; that's how the writer emphasizes his key points.

But if you picture the words actually being preached to a large gathering it soon becomes obvious that Brother Ryle is entreating his audience, especially its younger members, to treat these admonitions seriously, and to act on them without further delay. For this speaker, "sooner" means NOW. One person found this helpful 2 people found this helpful. This book is a must have for every young man, and even older men as well.

This book gives awesome wisdom and insights as to how sin can affect the life of a man. I highly recommend it. Prepping for a middle school boys' study by revisiting this familiar collection of advice from Bishop Ryle. Still too dualist for my taste and conviction , and perhaps a little overeager on the prohibitions side of things, but full of wisdom well earned, and the sort of confrontational zeal boys thrive on.

If only middle school boys have the ears to hear it.

Review: “Thoughts for Young Men” by J.C. Ryle

Ryle points us to the hope in Christ and reminds us of the folly in waiting to follow God and the dangers of sin. Ryle's "Thoughts For Young Men" is a short, yet, compelling book that warns every careless and godless young man of the doom that waits him in this life and the life to come. Though written over years ago, Ryle's words are still greatly very relevant, offering practical and spiritual advice.

I would encourage every pastor, youth leader and parent to give a copy of Ryle's book to the young men in their lives. And, if at all possible, to read through the book with them, stressing the importance of heeding Ryle's counsel. May 28, Corey rated it it was amazing.

Excellent and surprisingly timeless truth coming from a 19th century bishop. Was struck by how clear and lucid Ryle's advice was written. Most of it is very simple, but so very wise. Because it's short, I might re-read this one on occasion. Was personally challenged to live differently because of it. May 13, Koushik Das rated it liked it. If you're an atheist, then there's very little take-away for you from this book.

I believe that every follower of Christ needs to read old Christian books. We live in an age where much "fluff" passes for evangelical literature.

But it would do many Christians much good to read after serious, Godly authors who themselves knew God personally. Thoughts for Young Men is just such an example of a timeless book that will be of great spiritual benefit for young men and women alike. In fact, the first recommendation of this book that I ever read was from a young woman! Ryle's bo I believe that every follower of Christ needs to read old Christian books. Ryle's book has a soberness about it. Ryle knew that there is nothing more important than spiritual things.

He urges young people to watch over their soul, realizing that nothing else matters at all. Ryle takes God seriously and he takes sin seriously. This is something which is seriously lacking in the contemporary church. Let me quickly recount some highlights from the book. Ryle warns of some temptations that young men are particularly vulnerable to. Love of pleasure 3. Thoughtlessness and inconsideration 4. Contempt of religion 5.

Fear of man's opinion Then Ryle gives some general counsels to young men. Try to get a clear view of the evil of sin. Seek to become better acquainted with our Lord Jesus Christ. Never forget that nothing is so important as your soul. Remember it is possible to be a young man and serve God. Determine as long as you live to make the Bible your guide and advisor. Never make an intimate friend of anyone who is not a friend of God.

Finally, Ryle gives some special rules for young men. I found these not particularly revolutionary but particularly helpful. Sometimes we just need to be reminded of the basics! Resolve at once, with God's help, to break off every known sin, no matter how small. Resolve, by God's help, to shun everything which may prove an occasion for sin. Resolve never to forget the eye of God. Be diligent in the use of all public means of grace.

Resolve that wherever you are, you will pray. Ryle's book is a classic and should be read particularly by every young Christian. In our age of moral decadence, it is easy to not take the Gospel very seriously, particularly the parts of the Gospel relating to sin and personal holiness. Thank God we live under grace!

That same grace will help us to live out the principles discussed in this book. We need to be constantly reminded that God's grace is never an excuse for loose living. This book convicted me. At times I didn't enjoy it because it made me realize how serious my sin really is in God's sight! If you decide to read Ryle's Thoughts for Young Men you should , prepare to be made uncomfortable. But, if you will take it seriously, prepare to be brought closer to Christ. I give this book a 5-star rating not because it discusses anything new or revolutionary and not even because it is that exciting to read.

I give it a 5-star rating because the principles discussed within must be read and applied by every person who would live the Christian life successfully. At times, Ryle's book is not a comfortable read. But it is a necessary one. A good nudge for young and old men alike. This book encourages a deeper understanding of one's relationship with God and furthermore to put it to good use and not use your young age, nor be ashamed of it in the world's eyes. For defining one's personality, you need not other's approval, but a strong connection with both the heavenly and the humanly inside you.

The author not only encourages you in getting closer to the Lord but also within these pages there are hidden many useful Short but rich. The author not only encourages you in getting closer to the Lord but also within these pages there are hidden many useful hints on how to keep your head high and confront the wickedness and absurdity of the world as it is. The warm, if not, fatherly tone with a twist of Biblical references can only bring encouragement to one's physical and mental health.

Stay bold and keep your chin up. You are not alone. Young men and women However, in recent years it was thought it would be helpful even in our own time. Mark Dever writes the forward.

Thoughts for Young Men by J.C. Ryle

The substance of Ryle's teaching is dead on and relevant for today's young people young men in particular. Young men and women haven't really changed in the years since he wrote this these pages. I believe every pastor in America ought to get this short book 75 pages by the box load and distribute them to all the young people of his church and tell them there will be a test. This is my second time reading this book.

This time around I read it with two other guys and I was surprised at how timely J. The small book was packed full of practical application, encouragement to stand firm for Christ, and challenges to kill sin. Pick this book up and find someone at your church to read it with. It's applicable to both men and women, despite the exclusive title. Sep 25, Matthew Miller rated it really liked it.

The author clearly writes towards his audience but I think that many of his thoughts would apply to anyone of any age. He challenges young men to be more, to do more and to fulfill the roles that God has set before them. While all valid and crucial, his writing comes off a little bit impersonal and academic.
