Edwards may best be known for his sermon, "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God," which probably unduly predisposes modern hearers to think of the Puritan preacher as an angry pastor and homiletician.

Jonathan Edwards had much to say on the glories of heaven, and how those realities ought affect our lives now. Nichols captures it well via a brief look at several sermons of Edwards on this topic, and thus this book is a delight to read. After a brief biographical sketch and a discussion of Edwards' persona and family life, Nichols turns to the sermons in 6 chapters.
The first discusses the "way of love," reflecting in 1 Corinthians Next we discuss what Paul means when he calls us citizens of heaven in the context of what citizenship meant at the time --we bring heaven to where we live now like the Philippians, as Roman citizens, brought Rome to Philippi. As believers bound for heaven, we have a duty toward charity now, Edwards and Nichols go on to point out. And, we can persevere even in the face of sorrow as we wait for the delights to come.
We may be filled with joy and worship. Edwards was no dour theologian. He waxes and waxes and waxes poetically on the pleasures of heaven, and how they seep into our lives now. These chapters were uplifting, encouraging.

However, I did think this author did a very nice job of making Edwards accessible. I also liked the modern applications he used to illustrate some of Edwards' teachings.
I was particularly taken by his description of widows and orphans as those with no voice or influence, i. Isn't that really what it means in any culture to seek justice? T Yes, I agree with the Amazon reviewer who said that if you really want to know what Jonathan Edwards thought, read Edwards. To give a voice to those with none?

Dec 05, Joel rated it did not like it. This was an impulse buy that 2 chapters into the book I had to decide whether to continue just to finish it or put it away. I didn't shelve it and sadly, didn't really take anything away from this one. The writing was trite, the illustrations were predictable, nothing said was new or put in a way that improved on what is out there already.
If you're interested in Jonathan Edward's view on living in between, read Jonathan Edwards, not this. Wonderful Jonathan Edwards has long been a beckon for Christians and this book puts forth the best of his view of heaven. His description of heaven is full of everything a child of God desires. In this work, each chapter summarizes a particular sermon from Edwards on the themes of heaven and love.
If you don't have the time to read Edwards, reading Nichols on Edwards is a great way to go. Sep 06, David Luke rated it it was amazing. One of half a dozen or so books on Edwards by Nichols. A great little book examining Edwards' view of heaven and its impact on living the Christian life now. Also some interesting insights on how Edwards not only taught on this theme but how it impacted his life in difficult times.
