And when Marion abandons her family, Jane steps in to help with the couple's two boys, setting in motion a series of events, all of which expose the push and pull within every relationship. As desire and loyalty are blurred, it becomes clear that nobody can escape the devastating impact of a family falling apart. The Necessary Marriage is an intense, intimate portrait of how couples come together and grow apart, and the passions that drive us to do crazy things.

Except she knows she hasn't. After Charley and her husband Tom move into Elmwood Mill, sinister memories of a previous existence start to haunt her. Despite both their attempts to dismiss everything with rational explanations, the feeling turns to certainty as the memories become increasingly vivid and terrifying. Charley is persuaded to undergo hypnosis - but in searching deep into her past, she will soon fear her future. But would you kill for them? So what if yours was being terrorised by a neighbour - a man who doesn't listen to reason, whose actions become more erratic and sinister with each passing day?

You go to the police, but they can't help you. You become afraid to leave your family at home alone. But there's nothing more you can do to protect them. Venice has been Lydia's home for many years, a place where she has found peace and fulfilment. Then one day she glimpses a young man's face in the crowd that threatens to change everything. He's a heart-stopping reminder of a dreadful secret she believed she had banished to the past As a young child, Lydia and her sister were sent to live with grandparents they'd never even met before.

It was a cruel and loveless new world for them and it forced Lydia to grow up fast. She learned to keep secrets and to trust sparingly, and through it all she was shadowed by grief and guilt. Now, twenty-eight years later, Lydia is persuaded to leave behind the safe new life she has created for herself and return to England to face the past. And maybe her future. The perfect escapist read for fans of Santa Montefiore and Katie Fforde. Our Books See all Books. Rather Be the Devil by Ian Rankin.

It also has a rather abrupt ending, almost as though the author couldn't quite bring herself to write about what would happen next. Very complex family drama linked by the three sisters in law.

All this said, a good read. Apr 25, Sumaiya Mubeen rated it liked it. The start was really good and the story progressed well too. The author had not written enough about Julia and Maddie. I still want to know what happened to Julia's baby? Did Aaron ever realise the truth or did Julia keep him in the dark forever? Jan 15, Camilla Fals rated it it was amazing Shelves: My, oh my did i love this book! I'm not a big fan of the chick-lit type of books but this one definitely goes on my 'favorite' shelf!

The plot is intriguing and Lokko is able to make you fall in love with the characters, make you hate them and feel like you're part of the family all in one book! I devoured it in less than two days and i surely am gonna reread it sometime soon! Feb 22, Bettina rated it it was amazing. Another brilliant book by one of my favourite authors. Nightcore - Secret Summer「Nerdhead Feat Chihiro」

Jun 18, Courtney rated it liked it. As usual a great set of characters from LL, but a terribly abrupt ending.

I feel like all the great character building was for nothing. Especially after loving sundowners and saffron skies so much. Not boring even in a row.

I have no words, really. It's the first book I read by Lesley Lokko and there are no words to describe how beautiful it is. Suggested a thousand times, 5 stars are few. Jan 07, Elsie Bryan rated it really liked it.

I thought this book was a wonderful concept. It bought together an unlikely gathering through circumstance, which is what life is all about. Well written and tied up neatly. Particularly liked the character who was a refugee from Somalia, interesting historical detail. Jun 25, Kelly rated it really liked it. Though you can't see the relevance of each character at the beginning they are so woven in to meet with a scandalous tale of intrigue and betrayal which goes beyond what you would expect.
