I kept on saying, "This has to get better" and it never does. The book needs an editor. There are hyphen marks in the middle of words for no reason. We're treated to "doc-uments" "mon-ey" and things like that. It was a distraction and there's no excuse for that. It's just someone not doing their job.
I won't' even suggest this as a book you can get from the library.
It has the feel of the "DaVinci Code", never comes close to it. This novel reads almost like formula writing. The female looks down on the male lead initially, but before long she sees him as quite a hunk. He admires her for more than her body which is terrific. He is being framed by someone he works with. Before long the two must flee the scene. The car chase is really exciting, and our heroes shake the bad guys.
Before long there is another scary scene for the two of them to have to worry about being able to survive, and so it goes. While we know they had great sex, we were spared the gruesome details. It's an okay book for a plane ride, but it's really predictable. I assume parts of this novel are historically correct, the problem is I don't know which parts. I read this book in a day, and could not put it down for the fast paced drama, intermingled with a small amount of romance.
I liked the characters although perhaps there could have been a little more insight into them. What I really wanted was sequel, to see how the rest of things turned out, and more about the 2 socities as well as the main characters parental involvedment. The book eniticement preview that followed seems to take a step back in time, rather than forward. There is not much use to reading a novel that happened hundreds of years prior to the novel you just completed. I'll check the story line of the other book, "Tempest" but if it is a sequel, that is not readily apparent in the first few pages of the preview.
I enjoyed teh writers style, and I always enjoy a bit of history combined with some fast action as well as police and FBI involvement. I'd read it again, which is the best compliment I think you can give a book. Light reading, but a nice diversion. I always try to intersperse some light reading in between reading "heavier" novels, and boy have I read some heavy novels and one page non fiction prior to this. It was a welcome relief to not only read something lighter that also had a historical base my favorite kind of novel without having to stop every 2 seconds to make note of typos, grammatical mistakes and such.
I only have one note to myself in this book about one sentence that was a bit confusing. I recommend this book, especially if you are star struck about Abraham Lincoln as many of us are.
The characters had no depth. If you are a seller for this product, would you like to suggest updates through seller support? But from an entertaining fiction story based on history, this was amazingly done. Share your thoughts with other customers. Amazon Inspire Digital Educational Resources. I love historical fiction so seeing the serious cover and knowing it could give me more insight into the Lincoln days made me excited to read this book. It was a distraction and there's no excuse for that.
I hope the "other side of him" was a true part of this novel. If it was and I suspect it was it makes more sense as to how he got elected President, and the true motivations behind the Civil War and the political machinations at play. As a very amateur Lincoln enthusiast, I loved the bits and pieces that made up the mystery. As a lover of great characters, I totally enjoyed the protagonists created by Mr Best! The Society itself that supposedly reaches back to the days of Lincoln, is very believable We all should wonder what secrets have continued through history clear through today and what result could occur if the information became public.
Even our most respected President must have needed the protection of a force designed to keep secrets secret as he tried to keep the union together. Most of us have assumed and wondered for many years. If this sounds like your cup of tea, indulge! Myself, I am going to search out another Best novel I really enjoyed it. Didn't know much US history about Abraham Lincoln and this was a bit if a history lesson for me. Good characters and a strong story. Give it a go. I must say that my initial impression from the opening scene almost stopped me in my tracks.
The author has a exposition scene where a reporter in the s is attending an Abraham Lincoln speech in New York prior to Lincoln's election. Somehow I doubted that s reporters worried about their "careers", or that Lincoln ever would have said "That is cool.
However, what I thought were historical anachronisms aside see Author's comment below , the book got much better. It is a convoluted plot, enjoyable and definitely worth the time. I was a bit disappointed that the climax happened so fast and without any details on exactly how all of the main characters' cross-country rampage got swept under the rug.
No major formatting or editing anomalies either. I would definitely consider reading more of James Best's work. One person found this helpful. See all reviews. Most recent customer reviews. Published 8 months ago. Published 10 months ago.
