True, the four do not always seem to be communicating seamlessly. At times, it sounds a bit like a violin duet, with Viola and Cello accompaniment. But that may also reflect the composition.
The dynamics are very sensitive, in contrast with quite a few Romantic chamber recordings where they seem exaggerated. There's a very good essay included though it's a difficult read, having been translated from German on Schumann's emphasis on repeated motifs, especially rhythmic "aphorisms", in framing his pieces, in contrast to Beethoven's perfection of theme and variation.
But what makes this disc a winner is the sound. Very clear and open with a good 3d image. So dynamic and memorable. One person found this helpful. This is the most you can get by Schumann I am not an expert! Maybe you know more than me.

Although the CD status is perfect and there is no scratch or break on it, It gives a lound rattle and undesirable noise on all the tracks. Most likely it is a recording problem.
Actually i'm so disappointed regarding the quality inspection procedure Amazon is adopting. I want this CD badly but what i've found make me reconsider my future orders from Amazon. I tried to ask for replacement but i've been shocked when i found my self compelled to return the original CD to amazon at my expense.
In many a composer, we go looking for their late works and in parallel, disparage the compositions of their youth. Schumann is the exception. Whatever one might say about his later works, is there a richer seam of gold in the world than his corpus from Opus 1 to 54? Not all of them are masterpieces but duds are minimal. What can one say of Opus 41, his three string quartets written in the year as the great Piano Quintet ?
It is a testimony to Schumann's plenitude that he could take such a foreign medium and bend it to his will. How idiomatic they sound!
Take the finale of the first quartet: It's as wondrous as the passage that leads into the finale of the Fourth Symphony. To ask how he did it is as asinine as calculating how many angels can dance on a pinhead. The Force was with him. Ignore the most unimaginative cover of all times and Edith Eisler's fulminations she's a googy-egg ; contained herein are performances that are worthy of this music.

For once, a latter-day Gramophone gets it right by empurpling this disc as the Record of the Year in Hitherto, I never held Opus 41 in much esteem. Hearing this has led to a Copernican Revolution. This music is inspired; whilst indebted to the usual sources, Schumann has his own voice in his domain.
Conscious as they are of transience, the slow movements are threnodies: Passionate and poetic by turns, the Zehetmair Quartet burns like the sun. The outfit is perfectly integrated with one another. They're men on a mission: Do not purchase this disc unless you're prepared to be proselytized to the cause. Schumann attempted something very new with his set of 3 quartets Op.
This was a break away from his title-focussed work such as he wrote for the piano with a new focus towards music freed from such literary constraints. His compositional voice is strikingly unencumbered by adherence to any orthodoxy, and his work is direct in its emotional and intellectual communication.
My Illness Is the Medicine I Need, for soprano, violin, cello, and piano, is particularly effective; its aphoristic texts come from a Benetton "Colors" magazine that included photographs of psychiatric hospitals and quotations from their patients.
Larcher 's understated text setting allows the voices of the patients to be heard with unaffected bleakness and it is strongly moving. Even though it uses a contemporary harmonic language, the string quartet Ixxu is old-fashioned in its emotional clarity. His quartet Cold Farmer is similarly direct and generous in inviting the listener in, and here again the slow movement is especially deeply felt and engaging. In the other works, soprano Andrea Lauren Brown , violinist Christoph Poppen , cellist Thomas Demenga , and the composer at the piano give comparably intense and committed performances.
