    This graphic book describes how she has experienced several assassination attempts, despite travelling everywhere with armed guards. Even at night, she has to be on the move, sleeping in different houses and concealing her husband's name for fear of putting his family in danger. Her condemnation of the jihadis who claim they brought freedom to Afghanistan by forcing the Russians out is an important antidote to the uncritical support they have long had from most western commentators and politicians.

    Describing them as no less bigoted than the Taliban, she does not even spare Ahmed Shah Massoud, the Northern Alliance leader once dubbed by western journalists "the lion of the Panjshir". Her opposition to the US war and Nato-led occupation is no less significant. What diminishes Joya are frequent lapses into a self-righteousness that alternates between sectarianism and bombast: She remains under this secular madrassa's influence. You did not have to be a Maoist to do so. The sad thing is that, even with hindsight, Joya has nothing good to say of the other secular modernisers whose desire to change Afghanistan was no different from hers, except that they felt they had to take Soviet backing in the civil war against the fundamentalists.

    Many Kabulis look back with nostalgia on these socialists who ran the country for three years after the Russians left and whose repeated offers of national reconciliation were spurned by the western-backed mujahideen.

    To Joya they are nothing but "former Russian puppets". She also criticises other secular anti-fundamentalists such as Sima Samar, the chair of the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission, and Ashraf Ghani, one of the leading candidates against Karzai in the imminent election. They are ruled out of court for once having served in Karzai's government. What, then, does she propose? Friends sometimes urge her to create a new party, she reports.

    It sounds like Gordon Brown on a bad day: Afghans surely deserve more than this. No one can question Malalai Joya's courage.

    I would really recommend for anyone to read this, I believe that the struggle in Afghanistan is very truly and clearly depicted in this book. May 29, Travis Lupick rated it liked it. This is not a review but is based on an interview I had with the author. It was originally published in the Georgia Straight newspaper. Canada's scheduled pullout from Afghanistan can't come soon enough for Malalai Joya.

    In an interview with the Straight, the women's-rights activist and the country's youngest member of parliament said she wants all NATO forces out of Afghanistan tomorrow.

    In the book, Joya recounts tales of her childhood and her entry into social work and activism. She also denounces NATO's presence in Afghanistan as a violent occupation and calls for the criminal prosecution of a number of fellow MPs, whom she accuses of corruption, murder, and war crimes.

    Pressed on what she thinks would happen if NATO did withdraw its troops tomorrow, Joya argued that even if the country plunged into deeper violence, the Afghan people would be rid of at least one adversary. But, she cautioned, there is much that western powers must do before they regain the trust of the Afghan people. May 12, Hafasa rated it it was amazing.

    A very interesting book, it shows how a real human rights activist face challenges in a warn-torn country. She is voice of educated Afghans. Dec 31, Jana rated it liked it. I think this is a really important book to read.

    Raising My Voice

    I admire the strength and character of Malalai Joya and her fight for women's human rights in Afghanistan. Still the book as a written account of her struggles feels badly written at times. The struggle and gravity of her positions gets dulled away with weird sentence phrasing and, at times, it appears as if though she is preaching and justifying her actions rather than telling her hard truth. What I missed in this book is the unapologetic words a I think this is a really important book to read.

    What I missed in this book is the unapologetic words and word framing which would describe her amazing fight that should be an inspiration to us all rather than a watered done version of justification in which she appears as if she is not human or permitted to make a mistake. Still, I would recommend this book to a lot of people worldwide, especially some Americans and Brits who are unaware of what was done to the people of Afghanistan.

    Dec 07, Tricia Riley rated it really liked it Shelves: This was an interesting read by an amazing woman. Her story is inspiring. She raised a number of issues in the book that were new to me. The first half of the book was excellent as it was more of a personal story.

    The second half was not as good as it focussed more on the problems Afghanistan has rather than her story. That section was not as interesting.
