A mad old lady on a hour flight is a threat to other passengers One person found this helpful. Ironic Humor and good facts on the drive home. Some of Dave Barry's books are screamingly, laugh-out-loud funny.
Others are just silly and juvenile. This is one of the lesser Dave Barry books; it's still amusing, in a juvenile and just plain silly way, but it's far from his best. This collection of Dave Barry's 21st century annual reviews, with his sort of history of the world prior to the year , aims its pointed humor at the absurd behavior of those who may take themselves just a little too seriously, and especially those who seem to think they can outwit the general public. While it may be true that an alarming number of Americans can be outwitted, you can be sure "the funniest man in America" won't be among them.
From suit-wearing talking heads on TV, to Martha Stewart who just wants to focus on her salad , to Al Gore and his status reports from earth , to most anyone connected to the Bush administration, like Dick, "Dick," Cheney , Barry massacres them all with his rapier wit. He only spares the year because after the September 11 attacks "it didn't feel right to make jokes about the rest of the year and then either ignore the attacks or suddenly become serious. Dave Barry is timeless. I bought this book for my 24 year old son during his recovery; wasn't sure if he would enjoy it, given his age and growing up in today's video game over the top razzle dazzle entertainment world.
He read it multiple times, loaned it out to his room mates, they loved it! Some of the references are dated Ronald Reagan ; but a little bit of history didn't hurt him. He said he looked to see when the book was written, then it made sense and he got the humor. Good thing I was sitting down. It was one of the best books I've given him.
He's read it multiple times. Not as laugh out loud funny as I've come to expect of Mr. It had its moments, but i think my issue, if you will, is that you really need to remember people and events from the years covered, in order to "get" a lot of this book. This style of humor did not age well in my eyes. A bit repetitive in places, but for the purpose of making points. Plenty of laugh out loud moments. I grew up loving his humor, but it's become more and more formulaic as time goes on, and there's only so many times that the letters in someone's name rearranged, or a goofy suggested band name, or even, dare I say it, a fart joke, can be funny. This book is mostly a compilation of his "Year in Review" columns, with a bit of other humorous quick recap thrown in for good measure.
It seemed tired to me, and not all that funny, and that's saying a lot f I think Dave Barry retired at the right time. It seemed tired to me, and not all that funny, and that's saying a lot for someone who grew up loving his books and columns. I think in the end there's just only so far he can carry his humor before it needs a shot in the arm of new and interesting, and this book was absolutely missing that.
The format of the book itself gives it a repetitive nature, but the author's style of writing also leads to repetition. While some repetition can not be avoided, I was hoping for a more original and inspired work. If you have never read one of Dave Barry's works, I do not suggest you start with this one.
All-in-all this book is an easy read with some easy laughs, but it leaves something to be desired. Apr 23, Laura rated it it was amazing Shelves: He signed this for me when I went with some friends to see him at a bookstore in DC. The inscription reads, "For Laura, a goddess. Feb 25, C. Scott rated it it was ok. Look, I like Dave Barry a lot, but I could not finish this book. Barry can be hilarious but I just thought this was silly nonsense. Perhaps I wasn't in the right mood but I don't think this kind of material ages very well.
Maybe these annual recaps were funnier when it was all recent history. May 06, Jimyanni rated it liked it Shelves: Some of Dave Barry's books are screamingly, laugh-out-loud funny. Dave Barry's half serious, half silly take on history which consists of his year-end wrap-ups from to and a brief rundown of everything before that. Mar 17, Heather rated it did not like it Shelves: I thought this was a good one to read at work in the middle of the night, something I didn't have to think hard about. But it was too mindless even for that and I couldn't bring myself to waste my time to finish it.
I've always liked Dave Barry of his work, I've read one other book, scattered columns, and really liked his TV show , and I really, really enjoyed reading this. Both the history of the previous millennium and the newer stuff from the beginning of the 21st are hilarious. The turn of the millennium was around the time I started seriously following the news I had just turned 13 , and I was surprised by how quickly most of the stories came back—but of course not at all surprised that B I've always liked Dave Barry of his work, I've read one other book, scattered columns, and really liked his TV show , and I really, really enjoyed reading this.
The turn of the millennium was around the time I started seriously following the news I had just turned 13 , and I was surprised by how quickly most of the stories came back—but of course not at all surprised that Barry's take on them was hysterical. The numerous references to Democrat-Republican animosity and Democratic obstruction of Bush were both really funny and oddly comforting given all the hand-wringing about our divisive political landscape, it helps to be reminded that things weren't all that different in the past.
So overall this was a really great read, both as a reminder of why I like Barry and of a simpler time in my life which may have been a simpler time in everyone's lives, but given the parallels I've noted here, I sort of doubt it. It was read by Michael Kramer, who also records commercial audiobooks for Audible and other publishers I think he specializes in fantasy books; I know he's narrated some of Brandon Sanderson's books. He was surprisingly good at reading humor, which made the book even more enjoyable. Apr 19, S.
Facebook photos little flat now that it's 10 years after the last year in review I'll put it in the book. It's an interesting reminder the new stories of my junior high, high school and missionaries. This is Dave Barry's take on the last millennium in the first chapter and the current one in all the remaining chapters. Dave is at his best when discussing the craziness that is our modern life. He is close enough to what is really taking place that it is the best humor I've read in quite a while.

I love Dave Barry's end of year article. It doesn't work quite as well in an audiobook format. I tend to like Dave Barry's stuff, but I just couldn't make it through this one. Mar 11, Randall J. A terrible book in every respect. A collection of "jokes" that were likely stale at the time and haven't aged well at all. I'm generally a fan of Barry's, but this book is pure excrement. I remember looking forward to his year-end wrap-up column in the Sunday paper each year.
His take on the year that was always had me laughing out loud. So how was it all tidily compacted into a book? There were still moments of laugh-out-loud humor. I particularly enjoyed his take on history pre As the Goodreads synopsis says: The invention of pizza by Leonardo da Vinci and of the computer by Charles Babbage who died in still waiting to talk to somebody from Technical Support! Reading the more recent years one right after the other rather than waiting a whole year--as one had to when Barry was writing his column , I realized how formulaic his humor was January" to rearranging people's names to say silly things to finding one incident each year to repeat over and over example: It was kind of like watching a whole season of some of the TV shows I loved as a kid.
I enjoyed them much better when a whole week had gone by rather than just five minutes. I think that sort of thing goes over much better in small doses. Over all, a fun, three-star read--but not an out-of-the-park funny book like some of his others Dave Barry's Guide to Guys, for instance. This review was first posted on my blog My Reader's Block.
