Pearce has done an excellent job of chronicling the long and important career of one of North Carolina's most influential citizens. One person found this helpful. Pearce does an excellent job describing the background and accomplishments of Jim Hunt -- a four term governor that truly made a difference for North Carolina.

This is a well-written biography of a four-term governor of North Carolina, a politician who had a massive impact on North Carolina, and although never very prominent on a national stage nevertheless had a worldview similar to many politicians of the New South and the modern Democratic party. The biography is written by a member of Hunt's inner circle.

The author acknowledges that an attempt at impartiality would be futile. Still, the excessively laudatory tone of this book is a liability. In parts it reads like a PR piece coming from Hunt's campaign rather than a biography.

One can be sympathetic to the subject without being as one-sided as this writer is. I enjoyed the book, and especially enjoyed reading about the political history of North Carolina throughout the second-half of the twentieth century a fascinating subject - an even more fascinating take on this period of the state can be found in William Link's biography of Jesse Helms.

I wish this book had been more critical of Hunt. Wonderful stories of the man who shaped North Carolina politics for 20 years. His dedication to education, jobs, and promoting NC is inspirational.
