The writing style is a little dated but is easy to read and gives a good description of the times. He takes the reader into the world of the "southern gentleman" with its class consciousness and "good " families but the harsh practicalities of years on the frontier and military life are also present.
Maury had an eye for detail that would appeal to historians and many 21st. I didn't know what to expect beforehand and read this book sort of on a whim I was curious if he would ever come out and state that in hindsight slavery was wrong. But in reading this, one has to keep in mind not to judge him by current standards. He's got some good stories but the book ends rather abruptly.
