Preparing for college, I informed my high school counselor that my sights were set on a career as an artist. She assured me that wasn't realistic. No, my future had teacher or nurse stamped across it. Even though I didn't argue with her prediction, my mind still whispered, Someone is going to do it. That thought is was what lead me, at 17, to begin reading books by Norman Vincent Peale , the father of positive thinking. His message fueled my longings and gave me the determination not to abandon them.
Holding on to my gift is one of the triumphs of my life. I could have so easily accepted what the adults in my world told me. As time unfolds, it becomes increasingly clear - authority figures don't know everything. When I became a parent, my joy couldn't be contained. The love I felt for my children made my mother's lack of interest in me even more obvious. One thing was certain: I would make sure my kids knew they mattered. The girl in the illustration is my daughter, Bridget, when she was She sits on a moon composed of her dad's chagrin.
Yes, that is his face embedded in it, and those are her words waltzing across the sky. Hold On to Your Dreams is certainly a worth addition to the legacy of this authentic, uncompromising and important sound experimentalist.
Lawrence has formidable skills as a biographer, possessing not only the requisite fondness for his subject but a miraculous ability to track down obscure figures who dropped out of the music scene decades ago. In his rigorously researched investigation of musician and composer Arthur Russell, cultural theory lecturer Tim Lawrence effortlessly explores his subject and in so doing shines fresh light on the darkened recesses of both New York's downtown music scene and the popular cultural landscape of Russell's times.
And despite Russell's relative obscurity, the book leaves you in no doubt as to how influential this maverick music figure has been. While the book provides many fresh insights into the 80s downtown hotbed, Russell emerges as a strange, fragile figure, in a monumental work. Psychologically, Russell emerges as indeed fascinating, more fascinating than his music, as a maverick without, Lawrence notes, the feisty self-righteousness such figures often embody. Russell has inspired a book that helps us understand a thrilling twenty-five years of American cultural history.
One of three in-depth books by professor Tim Lawrence detailing the downtown New York scene of decades past that I so admire. This one uses the musician and composer Arthur Russell as a kind of avatar to navigate the reader through what seemed like an extremely fruitful and creative time for the city. Arthur Russell was a personal artist whose musical vision led him to coexist in seemingly incompatible worlds. A Portrait of Arthur Russell. Please try again later. Arthur Russell is definitely the most important artist to have been re discovered in the noughties. Although he never found the success he deserved during his lifetime, he nevertheless produced a body of work that will never cease to fascinate discerning music lovers all over the world. This biography by Tim Lawrence - the first book ever on the Iowan maverick - is a wonderful introduction to its subject: The end result is an essential book.
One that you will keep going back to time and again, a work, in short, that is totally worthy of Arthur Russell's multifarious, radiant oeuvre. Excellent bio of a fascinating and hard-to-pin-down guy. Arthur Russell is amazing, and Tim Lawrence "Love saves the day," the best disco book written to date is the man to really write about him. But strangely, unlike "love saves the day," the style here is complete and utterly devoid of life. It's like reading a congressional report, a completely "just the facts" account of Russell's life and career.
There's not a hint of style or storytelling, just pure "Wikipedia"-dry narrative. This makes it a bit tough to swallow, but the content is so worth it. This book is very detailed and at times you find yourself skipping over parts.
It takes you into the heart and soul of such a simple but complex man from Iowa. This book by Tim Lawrence is indeed badly written and poorly researched. It contains numerous factual errors and false statements. Arthur Russell's legacy deserves much better than this! Tim Lawrence did a poor job on researching and failed to contact the owner of the recording studio that Arthur Russell used during the last decade of his life. Tim's book is clearly flawed.
