Good books aimed at teens and young adults can be hard to come by. This story shows the young reader that persistence can overcome the challenges in our lives, even when those challenges seem to be overpowering. I would recommend this story to teens and young adults. It is a very well written, fun to read book. I have grabbed the next book of this series, I want to know about the hidden world of this story.
Nov 13, Conan Tigard rated it really liked it. When I first started reading this story I was a little worried. When Gerrald contemplated suicide over being embarrassed, well, I didn't want to see that in this story. I am sure that a select few kids do think about it, but I didn't want to read about it in a Young Adult story. Luckily, this is soon left behind when Gerrald leaves Earth behind and the rest of the story reads fine. A lot of the characters that Rick Just introduces are unique and fun to read about, especially Whirly and Petta.
I When I first started reading this story I quite enjoyed this book and all of the sticky situations this group of questers get into on their travels to Mantigore's castle. I think young adults will enjoy the land, the characters and the story in Wizard Chase. I look forward to reading the next story, Wizard Girl, and I think kids will too. I rated this book an 8 out of Jun 13, Beverly rated it really liked it Shelves: It's a really good, original book.

The second book on the Wizards trilogy continues well, as the Daughter of the boy in the first book finds her way to Kimyra to deal with troubles left over from her father's visit years before. Using her knowledge of Earth technology, she rapidly becomes a capable user of that left by the ancients, and thus the Red Wizard by local standards.
Along the way she learns important lessons involving lying and responsibility.
A good series for a teen to read, and not too bad for an adult. One person found this helpful 2 people found this helpful. Reading "Wizard Girl" was rewarding because the story is so well told, but it will be likely to make you want to get both sequels right away. All three stories might as well be included in one volume. The story is so fun and adventurous! Good book to read even if you don't read the first book! This was a really exciting story with wonderful characters to fall in love with!
I can not wait for more! It wasn't bad at all. I'm glad there wasn't as much detail about the flying spiders. Can't wait to read the next one. One person found this helpful. Lots of thrilling action that always'm puts me on the spot. This review is for the Kindle edition ebook. The writing wasn't that good, the charcaters weren't special. The world and the atmosphere was great but I don't think this was the strongest magic book I've read. They bring out parts of you that you never ever knew were there. This book is set in a world where there were wizards who are Magic and warriors who are not.
But our two main characters, Xar, who is a Wizard, doesn't have any magical ability. And Wish, who is a Warrior princess, tries to hide her magical objects, because she doesn't believe that magical things are harmful.
The book was entertaining definitely, but there were "This is the problem with adventures. The book was entertaining definitely, but there were parts which I felt were unnecessary and made the book long when it could have been shorter. And it had slower parts which made the pacing a little bit off for me. And this is my only complaint about the book. You get the frustration of Xar and how he feels disappointed in himself and him wanting to make his father and nation proud of him. You feel the pressure he puts on himself in able to reach his goal.
The book also has beautiful friendships! I loved to see how Xar acted to save his friend, and it was so much fun seeing the quirkiness of Xar to get them out of the tough situation they were in. The end of the book was amazing and I didn't see that coming, and it had a feminist message to it which I thought was powerful and beautiful to read in a middle grade book. The book has beautiful pencil drawings I think in it which goes along with the story.. And a full page illustrations which is stunning! Overall, I really enjoyed reading the book!
So, that makes me so excited to read the next book in the series once it comes out! They are destined to hate one another but end up bumping into each other and working together through an unheard of situation - especially since witches are supposed to be extinct but Xar and Wish stumble across one I love this story. It's funny and really interesting. I really love when the characters are cursing or latah Nov 20, Mel rated it it was amazing Shelves: I find myself shying away from Middle Grade novels more often than not because I tend to find them a bit juvenile for my tastes, and I know that's the point but I just generally don't enjoy them.
I absolutely loved this one. I loved the plot, the characters, and the low key hidden meanings and social commentary. I think that it is a fun story for children, especially around the Halloween season, but I also think that it can teach kids a lot. It's a fun plot, a world where wizards are being killed I find myself shying away from Middle Grade novels more often than not because I tend to find them a bit juvenile for my tastes, and I know that's the point but I just generally don't enjoy them.
It's a fun plot, a world where wizards are being killed by warriors who are coming over to take their land. Two children, one from each side, meet one day and a whole bunch of shenanigans happen. I didn't ever imagine myself giving a Middle Grade novel 5 stars, but I enjoyed it a lot and I just didn't see any thing wrong with it. The only issue I had was with the main male character, but then again like he was understandably irritating and I think his character growth was pretty good and will obviously continue to grow in further books.
Just a lot of fun and I thoroughly enjoyed every moment I was reading this. Aug 02, Ula rated it liked it. I listened to the audiobook for this and David Tennant's narration is amazing!
His Scottish accent gave this book such a lovely whimsical magical feel. Obviously I was not the target audience but I still really enjoyed it. However, it was annoying sometimes, because of all the accents. But still very good, tho. I like the old raven especially.
The main problem for me that I didn't care for characters at all. I felt nothing for them. I still can't answer why. Nov 03, Jonathan rated it it was amazing. This might be my newest favorite children's book. I've always been a fan of the fun, witty writing found in Cowell's "How to Train Your Dragon" series and that allure drew me to this book as well.
Needless to say, she did not disappoint. That same prose of writing can be found within the pages of this book, from the way the characters interact with one another to "The Unknown Narrator" who speaks directly to the reader at certain times throughout. There is a tiny spark of magic hidden within the This might be my newest favorite children's book.
There is a tiny spark of magic hidden within the way Cowell writes that makes her unique and appealing to me.
Being the first book in a series it is always important to hook the reader and leave them wanting more. So much is unfolded in this story, in a way that is not at all confusing sometimes a downfall at the start of a series , and the way this book ends has me screaming screaming screaming for more. I'm super disappointed that I have to wait for the next book to be released. Cowell crank that puppy out quick and get it on the shelves, like NOW!!!!! I love the complexity of the characters, but also the simplicity that is around them as well. This book is appealing to such a broad age group because of that.
Morals and themes are woven throughout and can elicit strong discussion for older children and adults , but for younger kids, they will simply enjoy the adventure of the story. To me the heart of the deep discussion resides in this conversation with the narrator held at the end of the book: You have to listen to the stories, for stories always mean something. There are some hidden here and there, but I think on the surface this book is just meant to be fun and entertaining and the reader will have to continue with the series to find out what is really hiding within the pages.
I love it even more!!!!! Oct 08, Hadaiyah rated it really liked it. Couldn't guess the narrator of the story Guess I'll have to find out when the next book comes out View all 4 comments. I rarely read Children's books. Their language and plot are a bit simpler than that of Middle Grade. So in an attempt to properly review You can view more reviews at: Wizards of Once is the tale of a Wizard and a Warrior who met in an unusual circumstance and had to help each other out in order to save both human and magic world safe from the evil clutched of the Witches.
Hands down, Cowell is a great storyteller and illustrator. Despite being short, I felt thoroughly entertained with the adventures of Xar and Wish. The illustrations are so beautiful that I loved looking at them for long periods of time to memorize every little detail.
However, being a proof copy, some illustrations were incomplete and yet to be included in the book. I was a bit sad about that but I'm sure the finished book is going to have an abundance of beautiful drawings that will entertain its young readers for hours. Xar, the Wizard, wasn't really my favourite character from this book. He's annoying, disobedient as mentioned by everyone , arrogant and self-centered.
I don't know how this kind of character would portray to a child but I do appreciate that Wish is the opposite of him. The book depicted how well two very different personalities can become friends.
Wish is truly a special girl, and I want her to be my friend. Someone who is kind, loyal and caring is very hard to find. The plot was very simple in a way that a child will be able to follow through easily and be amazed at all the wonderful new words that Cowell has created in this world. We see tough situations bringing Xar and his companions closer on a quest to save their world. It shows resilience, teamwork and perseverance bring out the best in us. And I think Cowell is great for this - for engaging a child's mind to question beyond fiction.
And see that these characters aren't so different from us at all. We all have moments of cowardice and selfishness, but finding the silver lining in every situation makes us grow into kind human beings. Its language and plot are simple to comprehend, the illustrations are on point, and there are so many questions you can ask your young reader to make them think beyond the story. I definitely would have enjoyed this book if I came across it during my preteen years. I'd definitely recommend reading this during bed time.
