To say it is a story of aviation, geopolitics, senseless bureaucracy, personal challenge, and global philanthropy is only to touch the surface. Moving from one flight tower to another, when English is not always the the language of the skies, with broken or unreliable onboard communication devices, in addition to an inexperienced multinational crew is my idea of stress to the nth power.
This merry band experienced an air controller admonishing them when they are 60 minutes away that the tower is closing for the night in 30 minutes; they lived in a city where there is no central heat of any kind in winter; they routinely went without sleep or food or showers for 36 hours at a stretch; they faced armed guards demanding visas they didn't have, while the administrative voice on the telephone from London tells them not to worry about it because the visas aren't really necessary anyway.
Their flight plans change at the last minute because political pique denies them entry into certain fly zones ; they experience faulty fuel gauges which give them no wiggle room in landing under adverse conditions, and they get up at dawn and do it again, and again, and again. Despatches describing the daily grind are interspersed with political and philosophical musings of the author and other long-time observers of the region and its geopolitical complexity. The beauty of the region, with its magnificent landscape and its place at the heart of human history, is conveyed in well-written prose tempered by Capt.
Taber's sense of adventure.

This is excellent tale of Caapt. Taber's experiences in the ealy years of the Afganistan conflict. Hard flying, and not always the most congenial ground forces. One person found this helpful.
