Joy That Lasts by Gary Smalley (1988, Paperback)

Please try again later. This is a re-write of the original publication of Joy That Lasts. There is no indication that it is a re-write. Now, how do I put down what I just discovered about this book? Why is there no indication it is a re-write with the same title as the book I thought I was ordering? I did think the cover was not indicative of the book that I remember reading but none the less it must be because it is the same title.

I gave this book to a friend who lost her brother recently and she is a widow.

I asked her in church how she liked the book and she said, "Why would I give her a book about marriage? I do remember it talking about how the only thing of value in life is Jesus and our relationship to him. All the rest could be done away with and as long as we have Christ in our life and are following Him, we are secure. The other things of life are a part but Jesus is the entire focus. I am going to get the book back from my friend and return it. Then I will order the "original" without the new re-write.

I am somewhat disappointed that the title for one book by him is used for a re-write. I am going to write the author and express this to him. I understand why he re-wrote it with the emphasis on marriage because that is his ministry and also marriage is under attack, big time.

Has any other author ever done this? I know there are revised but re-writing is something I never have encountered. One person found this helpful 2 people found this helpful.

If you are married and are having woes, or, if you are married and wish to not have woes, ANY book by Gary will set you straight, but be warned it does not come easy. Gary gives common sense advice, knowledge and practices that will work, but they won't work if you're not willing to look yourself in the face and poke yourself in the eye. We all fall into marital funk sooner or later, if you're not then you're probably married to a petrified moose. Just be honest with yourselves when you pick which book of his to read there are also a few he co-wrote which are of equal excellence.

In my case, only I read the book and that says a lot as to why I bought it now doesn't it! But Gary uses no gimmicks or secret potions, if you're willing to change he will guide you in the right direction even if your spouse doesn't care.
