After a bout in rehab, he is hit by a taxi, adding physical pain and disability to the mental versions.
Pit is brilliant, self-absorbed and funny. Truly likable in an unlikable sort of way. The book contains a cycle of short stories that reunite Pit with his old college chum, and out of the bottle, at least for the duration of each case. The only thing I didn't like about this book was that it contains only five stories.
I heartily enjoyed these stories. Both in his strengths and handicaps, the main character is an unusual and interesting protagonist even though he requires some goading into action , and his first-person viewpoint doesn't falter. The supporting characters, both the continuing and the single-story ones, are well developed; and the varied plots kept me guessing.
I found it especially refreshing that not all of the stories involve murder. This is very good reading, and well deserves its prizes.
I would read more. I had the pleasure of meeting John at RavenCon and thoroughly enjoyed being on panels with him. An enjoyable read covering a variety of venues.
