How Music Works

John Powell, a classically-trained composer and a physics professor, decided to write this entertaining, pain-free guide to the ingredients of music when he discovered that all the other books on the subject gave him a headache. Here he reveals the often little-known facts and fascinating science behind what we listen to, explaining the basics of harmony, scales, chords, keys and rhythm in a way that's easy for everyone to understand.

He also shows us why a note has a different sound to a normal noise, why Chinese people are more likely to have perfect pitch, and even why Beethoven and Led Zeppelin are musically similar. This book reveals things that people who play music should know but often don't, and will help all of us - even if we can't read a note - increase our listening pleasure. Paperback , pages.

Trying to cajole the wavering attention and general apathy, he is mimicking the amusing circus master. On such ground this book has failed this particular reader. Why do some authors insist on inserting really stupid dad jokes into books nowadays? Everytime Powell discusses something that could grab my attention, he ruins it by adding a really dumb one-liner that adds no value to his story. I get trying to be light-hearted about a subject, but it felt like every second paragraph was an attempt at a joke and i just got fed up with it.

It could have been a good book. This book takes a fascinating and complex thing and breaks it down into overly simplistic, repetitive drivel.

Loop

The author is occasionally funny, though I recommend skipping this one if you have any knowledge of music at all. The frustration of waiting for him to get to the real meat of it never subsides.

This book only got one star because I didn't get the content as much as I wish I had. Nugroho Rizki rated it did not like it Oct 12, Hani Salim rated it did not like it Nov 01, Check Retail Stores' phone number.
