Regency England Sensuality Rating: A confirmed bachelor and acknowledged rake, Lucien can barely tolerate his country cousin let alone her obnoxious mother ; determined to marry her off as soon as possible, he advertises for a finishing governess.

Alexandra Beatrice Gallant is a highborn lady who has been forced to earn her keep as a governess and desperately needs employment. Nevertheless, when she realizes that the handsome man interviewing her is the notorious earl, she has grave misgivings about accepting his job offer. Indeed, it soon becomes apparent that Lucien is not only committed to polishing his cousin's social skills, he's also dead set on bedding the lovely Alexandra. Unfortunately for Lucien, Alexandra is as strong willed and levelheaded as she is beautiful, and although Lucien doesn't believe in love, he finds himself wanting to slay dragons for the gorgeous governess.

For her part, Alexandra has increasing difficulty refusing the earl's kisses. Still, despite scandal and interfering dowagers, the biggest barrier to a happy conclusion is Alexandra's own self-doubt, and winning her hand will test Lucien's determination to the limit. Author Suzanne Enoch doesn't miss a beat in this charming Regency tale. The dialogue snaps with wit, the plot possesses interesting twists and turns, and the secondary characters are unforgettable, especially the horrid aunt. The heroine is intelligent and well educated, sensible as well as warmhearted, and is the perfect foil for the hero's cynicism and intellect.

She must never, ever, fall in love with someone above her station. But this was ridiculous. Except I did not get that. Preview — Reforming a Rake by Suzanne Enoch. And the way she complicated everything, too much time spent on her "not accepting his love".

It held my attention, and I got to the end, but it really felt there was something missing for me. As other reviewers have noted, it was a bit lacking in the steam department, and if you are going to base a story on animal magnetism, then there has to be more of a reason that just a couple of quickies, but my main struggles with this one was that I felt it didn't really set up the characters quite right.

Alexandra's character and background were quite well described, but I f I gave this 3 stars. Alexandra's character and background were quite well described, but I felt that Lucien's were not. He didn't seem that much of a rake to me - slept around and was given to swearing a lot, but you couldn't blame him for being unpleasant to his irritating relations and he didn't seem to do anything particularly naughty. It was a nice premise, but I felt like this story didn't really deliver. Having said that, I like the way Suzanne Enoch writes, in clear, descriptive, flowing prose, and that held my attention enough to have me reading way too late at night..

Sep 04, Ashley rated it did not like it. I wanted to like this book. I really did, but Alexandra made me so damned mad during the last 50 pages that I found myself angrily reading the thing, just wishing it was over. She was a complete idiot, to a point that it wasn't appealing a all, but instead overly frustrating.

What else could Lucien have done? For the first time I felt myself wishing that the hero would just say, "F you" to the heroine and move on with his life. Because honestly, her character was so horrible that she I wanted to like this book. Because honestly, her character was so horrible that she didn't deserve her happy ending. Lucien bent over backwards for her. Writers love the whole stubborn woman bit, but this one was overkill. Alexandra was the most unpleasant and stubborn heroine that I've ever read about in any historical romance novel.

I was fine with this book until the last 50 or so pages. And then I hated it. This one tops my least favorite HR books list. Save yourself the headache and stay away from this one. Jul 27, Ally rated it it was ok. This was Meh at it's best Hero: I loved his snarky personality right off the bat. It's what drew me in to the story. Frills and frippery be damned. And you know what, I loved him all the way through. Ok, I take it back.

About pages too many. Look, the quote unquote chemistry between the two was pretty much non existent for me. And glory be, everyone one of the "love" scenes was stick it in and go and be blissful. In the beginning she had several very valid reasons for not wanting to get involved with him. Once he'd turned the corner and fallen for her, he moved heaven and earth to address every concern and she still resisted. It started to feel contrived and I lost my investment in them. Darcy with a lot more mean. May 21, dreamwell rated it it was amazing. I've written a pages paper on this. That's where the pretty stars come from. Pretty solid start to the series. Nice twists and turns between the hero's family and the heroine. Apr 17, Mary rated it it was ok. Ahhh 2 - 2. I was sure I'll at least like the characters like in every other books The story interested me and I wanted to see how a sexy rake decides to marry a governess, but then, it was nothing like I expected. Lucien starts too soon with sexy provocations.

It's great when that happens after a man already falls for a woman, those are usual Ahhh 2 - 2. It's great when that happens after a man already falls for a woman, those are usually the most interesting parts, but here it was as if he was picking her up in a bar with lame lines.

Reforming a Rake

Alexandra is described as beautiful, incredibly smart and intelligent, funny bla bla. Sorry, but I can't read about these perfect women anymore. Especially when every other women is lame comparing to them. When Lucien was thinking how his cousin is tolerable, but nothing like smart and witty Alexandra It's like the author was forcing me to love her, but it's too unreal.

And the way she complicated everything, too much time spent on her "not accepting his love". I love when a man or a woman has to make a special gesture, but it their case, it was unnecessary. Why was she a duke's cousin? It bothered me that she couldn't just be a normal governess who won his heart.

And he even decided to pursue her for marriage when he found out about it. I didn't even like Lucien that much. In other historical romances, I would always get the feeling as if those men are working hard and are ambitious. He was handsome, smart but I didn't feel as if he's doing anything in his life. I was surprised by how only few sex descriptions were there and they weren't even good. So, the author succeeded to write something different from other historical romances.

I am disappointed because I have already read Vixen's story and I remember I loved it. Now after this, I'm not sure if I want to continue with this. The writing is superb; a fast paced plot filled with dialogue that is quick witted; entertaining; and characters with depth, are just a few to begin with. Highly recommended, and a keeper! May 23, Graylark rated it liked it Shelves: Couldn't decide whether this was a 3 or a 4. Plot itself had a lot of loopholes and some things that took place felt forced.

However, reading the book itself was a very easy and enjoyable experience, and it never felt like it dragged at any part. Actual sex scenes tend to be rather short, but I like the many little thrills she adds here and there. Firm negatives suddenly change into positives with what seems to be very little urging. I was waiting for some grand revelation that would explain it, such as them perhaps committing some heinous crime against him as a child. Even the cousin herself was inoffensive--her only crime was to be rather unintelligent and too obedient to her mother.

This was hardly Satan-spawn-worthy, and his vehemence on the subject with an abrupt about face later on just made him seem rather ridiculous. Jul 14, Cherie rated it it was amazing. Lucien you are a You start out a cynical bully but you do reform and believably too. Enoch wrote one of the best rakes ever. He is an unrepentant, no excuses, rake. He is not a nice guy even if he's your friend, he's so cynical. Then he meets Alexandra. He starts out his seduction of her the same as always but is turned down and away. The development of his affection for her is consistent and steady which I could swallow as it was realistic.

There are two antagonists.

Reforming a Rake (With This Ring, #1) by Suzanne Enoch

The first is Lucien's Lucien you are a The first is Lucien's Aunt Fiona who has arrived with her daughter Rose. She really has a rotten streak. The second is related to Alexandra and was not really necessary to the story in my opinion. I found it difficult to put this down. I kept waiting for the lull that others warned about but until almost the end when Alexandra leaves Lucien to teach at the school, I didn't sense a lull at all.

I did think Alexandra's reasons for leaving Lucien without talking it through were weak. Especially since their relationship had been based on honesty, sometimes blunt honesty. All the pluck and courage she showed from the beginning suddenly left her. Luckily her sudden slip didn't last too long and their reunion was a weepy one for me. I'm glad she properly apologized to him.
