Boer delightfully relates examples of the impact of the underlying geology of a region on the human history playing out on the surface of the land. A perfect case study concerns the "Moodus noises" eerie groanings associated with small earthquakes that have haunted Moodus, CT for hundreds of years chapter 6.

The Moodus name is thought to derive from the Mohegan name, "Mackimoodus", translated as "the place of many noises"; among early native inhabitants, the sounds were thought to be the voice of the good spirit, Kiehtan, but also the rage of Hobbamocko, the spirit responsible for suffering and natural calamities.

I can't help but say, having grown up in Connecticut, how much I enjoyed this book. When I was in Junior High and High School I spent countless weekends and longer periods during summer vacation wandering the woodlands and climbing over the rocky outcrops the author describes.
