I was reading this book in a restaurant and the waitress commented that it was required reading in her college class. We both agreed it is wonderful. I can't express how much I love Mary Oliver's work. Her writing is inspired, brilliant, true and transports me to the state of gratitude she writes from every time. One person found this helpful. Giving voice to our nature and the natural world each story or observation she shares is an invitation to live fully without hesitation or pretense.

Thank you Mary Oliver. Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. I purchased "Evidence" on a recommendation from a friend in New Mexico. Oliver is his favorite poet and I fully agree with him. I also love Maya Angelou and Oliver. She is not as esoteric as Dikinson and love the pictures she paints with her art poetry. I found this poetry book at the local library, recognized the author's name and brought it home. I loved it - was even moved to tears by the one about Twirler. Her poems divinize the world and remind us how little we see as we march around "ears stuffed with self" I paraphrase!

I wanted to have a copy to read repeatedly so I promptly purchased a kindle version which unfortunately has some formatting problems with some poems - still I prefer to have the imperfect format available to re-read now and then than not to have these lovely poems. I also purchased a copy for a dear friend who responded that he loved the poems too.

So to be explicit here - that's an unreserved 5 star review where do we click on the stars?! I never reviewed on Amazon before. I got this for a second time, as I wanted to share my delight with a friend. Mary Oliver's affinity with the natural world, to the point of identification with it, is what we need in this beleaguered age.

As a human species, we have lost contact with the web of life, from which we have emerged and Mary Oliver shows us the way back. Trees, trees and all those animals, great and small, are a source of wonder. If you wish to indulge yourself, get reading this wonderful and challenging collection.

This newest volume of Mary Oliver's poetry is as good as any she has published. It is experience, thought, and feeling distilled as few can do so well as Oliver. She has managed to eliminate even more adjectives than in earlier poems. She can look at the complexity of life, including its pain, and still rise to praise.

You have this day, and maybe another, and maybe Still another… And I have become the child of the clouds, and of hope. I have become the friend of the enemy, whoever that is. I have become older and, cherishing what I have learned, I have become younger. And what do I risk to tell you this, which is all I know?

The talk is all about computers, The news is all about bombs and blood. This morning, in the fresh field, I came upon a hidden nest. It held four warm, speckled eggs. Then went away softly, Having felt something more wonderful Than all the electricity of New York City. How grass can be nourishing in the mouths of the lambs.

How rivers and stones are forever in allegiance with gravity while we ourselves dream of rising. How two hands touch and the bonds will never be broken. How people come, from delight or the scars of damage, to the comfort of a poem.

Evidence Quotes

Let me keep my distance, always, from those who think they have the answers. And who else could this be, who goes off down the green path, Carrying his sandals, and singing? And you will hear the air itself, like a beloved, whisper: No, I didn't know where the roads would lead me.
