This is a wonderful little book, to share between a parent and child with autism, and for adults who need to understand what is happening with the child. Gunilla Gerland writes everything so briefly that I bet even Non English-speaking people diagnosed as Asperger Syndrome, High Functioning Autism, and Pervasive Developmental Disorder will get what the book is all about!
Since I was already diagnosed, I could easily point out what kind of syndromes apply to me right now. Sudden Changes, clumsiness, stressful peer pressure; these are exactly what I have suffered for ages. And according to my doctor, I have some difficulties in reading implications, which still gives me a real headache! So the point is you need to read this book whether you are diagnosed or not sure you have AS, autism, PDD, and any kinds of developmental problems.
And if you find your problems that apply to you, you'll eventually know yourself as well as how to cope with them. This book was short, clear and concise and written for young people first learning they have the condition. It was very easy to read aloud with my children.
However, I was hoping for something that went into a little more detail for them. This book is a good, simple start, but I'll need to find something more that goes beyond the info contained within. One person found this helpful. This powerful booklet fills a big void in that it is, as far as I know, the only good children's book about Asperger's syndrome and similar conditions. For a child with AS, it takes the subject out of the atmosphere of shame and mystery, explaining both the positive and the negative sides of the condition using simple, concrete and accurate language, supported by examples and visualizations.
For non-autistic children, to whom children with AS are often enigmatic, it goes a long way towards explaining their sibling or friend with AS.
