Hi Karen, I found sometimes it was the moments we thought were innappropriate when they actually happened that provided the levity later in the manuscript. Love the image of the undulating umbrella of grief, Lisa. Congratulations on this important book. And how thoughtful of you to consider the needs of your readers for the lighter moments — without denying the force of the driving rain.
And I know from your book, you DO understand this too! I appreciate your reading this.. Thanks for this post. I am beginning a memoir and will keep these points in mind. I appreciate the opportunity to perhaps win a copy of the book. I would love to read it. I found it helpful, when getting in-person feedback from writer friends, to watch their expressions as they read silently , and if there was never any smile or tiny chuckle, that was a clue that section maybe needed just a bit of uplift.
Good luck in your writing.
My father died unexpectedly last week. I am sorry for your fresh loss. Later, however, those notes were quite helpful to me. Lisa, thanks for that posting. It helps to remember the funny pieces around the edges of grief. So why not include that! Adding in the lighter, humorous moments seems particularly effective in a book-length manuscript but more difficult, or perhaps less necessary, in an essay.
Hi Evelyn, Thanks for reading. Many thanks for this post Lisa and Marion. I have been struggling with how to tell the tale of losing my husband. Without the love and humor of family and friends, I never would have been able to navigate his day coma or the past seven years. Hello Rosemary, Thanks for sharing how the funny moments helped lift you up in such difficult times. You are so blessed with friends with whom to find those moments. I hope you enjoy the book! I enjoyed reading Ms. It was on this day in that hurricanes also were named for men. Previously named only for women, this seems like justice, however late.
My sister has something to say about that, named as she is, for a racehorse. Fiddlehead ferns that is, sold and eaten while they are still rolled up. Fiddleheads are the unfurled fronds of a young fern harvested for food consumption. Got some food memoir? I lap it up, and write it down here. On this day in was the birth of Carl Linneaus, the man who created order out of chaos by creating a classification system for naming and identifying plants.
I created one of those, though mine divides by people, asking if you are either a burger or a burrito. On this day in was the birth of Rachel Carson, one of the greatest advocates the earth will ever know. The New Yorker magazine took a chance on her, first publishing her in and in serializing Silent Spring, in which she took on the subject of the ravaging effects of pesticides.
The book is still regarded as the cornerstone of the new environmentalism. She inspires me, and I might write a piece of memoir about reading that book or what she has meant to me. What creative inspiration does she provoke in you? Today, the Sierra Club has chapters throughout the United States and Canada that offer opportunities for local involvement, activism and outings.

I was so excited when I saw Kushinov's book on the market. I have been one of his patrons on patreon and this book reminds me of why I supported his work in the first place - it captures emotion in such an exquisite manner. The book is very insightful in where the artist had gotten his inspiration from and I am very happy with this purchase. He truly does inspire me and makes me want to strive to keep improving my art everyday so I finally caved in and bought this book in order to be able to study his art a little more closely than I would be able to through a screen.
So when it finally arrived I was immediately frustrated with Amazon, the book came visibly scratched and used. I had ordered the book brand new and to see it be in such poor condition is a big letdown. A big fan of the artist, his illustrations are detailed and presented in a way that makes each one feel as important as the one before. Included are mostly portrait illustrations but there are a fair number of urban landscape pieces included as well.
Ilya also includes process images for certain pieces that show his methods for completing his artwork which are very insightful.
I do wish that at least some of his pieces included his thought process to give us greater insight into how he accomplishes his works. Titles would also have been nice in order to view more sources of his work. One person found this helpful. I ordered this because I've followed the artist for quite a while on social media and his works never cease to amaze me. Definitely worth every penny to be able to just sit down and look at all of these amazing pieces of art!
Ilya Kuvshinov is still a rising artist, in terms of popularity, but damn, he's already a master in terms of artistry is that a word?
This book is a proof of his amazing talent, and his even more amazing sense of fusion between japanese pop-art influences, modern framing and classical portrait tradition. Also, i have to take note of the excellence of the book itself. The editing, the composition, the quality of paper, of printing The artbook is just a damn beautiful object.
It could be twice the price it is, it still wouldn't be a steal. I'm in love with it.
Very happy with this purchase bit gatta take off one point because it wasn't secure in its packaging the corners are a bit smooshed because of that. Still love it though and this artist. A really beautiful book with amazing illustrations. I love Ilya Kuvshinov's work and I am so happy to have this book in my art book collection. It's not too large, and I prefer that it isn't hardcover because it's easier to handle and flip through. I love the sketches as much as I love the finished pieces.
