If I try to be generous, I receive more. Patrick went into the parlor but found it empty. Then he went out onto the porch, welcoming the cool air, the smell of coming rain, the relief to the end of the heat and humidity. For the first time he placed his arm around her waist. He marveled at how natural it felt to hold her. She did not shiver at his touch, but leaned back against his chest. I had no idea she went through that. Can you imagine, my great-grandmother having to eat grass, and then starving to death, and her poor uncle, and all his family, and her sister—her sister would have been my aunt if she had lived.

I wish I could thank them all for what they suffered so my mother could come to America. I understand how awful it must be to speak of it.

His chin rested upon her head. The sudden cool air made the perfume of her hair all the sweeter. It came down in torrents.

They stood watching it. Patrick remembered Molly saying she could never cry enough tears for the million who died in the famine. He felt as if Nature wept tonight for all those innocent lives. She feared to be happy from fear it would not last. He only understood this truth as he spoke it, as he suddenly believed the world could be a wonderful place; that everything could work out for the best. He felt like an old Celtic bard who foresaw a hopeful future capable of washing away past grief.

You can find the list of the remaining events at: The book tour has generated a lot of discussion about Michigan, and specifically Upper Michigan authors, both present and past, so I wanted to post a little about the legacy of Upper Michigan literature.

Iron Pioneers: The Marquette Trilogy: Book One

Upper Michigan literature really begins with the Native Americans since they were here first. They practiced oral traditions and talked about their myths and the supernatural creatures and beautiful Great Lakes area. Much of this wonderful oral tradition has probably been lost, but some parts of it were preserved.

As far as printed books go, Henry Rowe Schoolcraft and his half-Ojibwa wife, Jane Schoolcraft, lived at the Sault and wrote down several Ojibwa legends that were collected into book form. Various versions of these works exist today. Longfellow never set foot in Upper Michigan, but we can claim him as one of our own for first making Upper Michigan significant in literature on a nationwide level. The poem remains well-known today and the U. Dark behind it rose the forest, Rose the black and gloomy pine-trees, Rose the firs with cones upon them; Bright before it beat the water, Beat the clear and sunny water, Beat the shining Big-Sea-Water.

Once you read the poem, the rhythm never gets out of your head. Another wonderful collection of Ojibwa narratives are those that Chief Charles Kawbawgam of Marquette and his brother-in-law Jacques LePique told to Homer Kidder in the s a depiction of this event is included in my novel Iron Pioneers. The manuscript was not published until by Wayne State University as Ojibwa Narratives , but it is another example of early Upper Michigan literature.

This novel is set in the bustling early village of Fayette, Michigan, once an iron-smelting town in the Garden Peninsula. Today it is a famous Michigan ghost-town. The novel describes the everyday life in the village of the ironworkers, fishing in the harbor, and the life and death struggles that those early pioneers faced.

On the tablet is a passage from the novel. The novel itself has beautiful descriptions of Mackinac Island in winter, and frankly the Mackinac Island scenes are the most worth reading. It is a rather conventional romance novel of its time in that the heroine leaves the island and goes to the East Coast where she falls in love with a man in society but is ultimately jilted and returns home to Mackinac Island. It is not a great novel, but it is well worth reading for the descriptions of Mackinac Island alone.

She reputedly wrote it because her daughter complained that she had read every book ever written for little girls. The story is about four little girls growing up in Lakeville in Upper Michigan who want a playhouse. The church allows them to use a small rental property it has in exchange for picking the dandelions off the lawn. The novel is based on a real house which still stands in Marquette today.

I imagine he and Carroll Watson Rankin knew each other, living across the street from one another. If only their conversations had been recorded. James Cloyd Bowman taught creative writing at Northern, and one of his students was John Voelker, who would publish the bestselling Anatomy of a Murder under the pen name Robert Traver.

I have resided and worked in Marquette for over 20 years after moving here from outside the UP. This book was interesting because I learned more about the area and locations of bygone buildings. I am not sure I would care if I had not been familiar with the area.

The individual characters and their stories helped to get a feeling for the attitudes and daily lives of the people in that period. But like the people of the period the story moved slowly at times. It left me at times feeling sorry for their circumstance and had they been real people I would have been more impressed. I was happy to finish the book and not inspired to read the remaining 2 books of the trilogy.

My fathers mothers family was in Marquette and Ishpeming around Civil War times and some relations are still in the area to this day. Sep 12, Beverly rated it it was amazing. Depth in Literature The Marquette Trilogy: Generally, I am a fan of the historical fiction genre anyways, but I chose this book in particular because of the book's setting. A novel about the building of the Marquette, Michigan area as a native of the Great Lakes area myself this book has a special spot in my heart.

I've lived on Lake Erie since birth and not only love but appreciate the history behind the Great Lakes area and all it has offered to our Nation as it grew into it's current strength. The small, individual stories behind the growth will never cease to amaze and Iron Pioneers is one of the greatest tributes to these small stories you will ever find. Iron Pioneers begins with the origins of Marquette, as the "wilderness" slowly grows into a thriving city. The story line itself is interesting enough, but the depth and strength of each and every character involved is simply amazing.

As you progress through the story you slowly grow with each character, so strongly that you become one of them. Through the roughest times when there's scarcely going to be enough food to survive a winter in this new uncharted territory, to the times of wealth and richness you bond with the friendships amongst the citizens as the town grows. In the beginning, you experience the trials and tribulations of a new land, untouched, trying to become livable. You quickly make your own choices of who to like and dislike, who to cry for and cheer for. Slowly you see a small town come into existence and then a small city.

Eventually the growth and development of the area seems amazing and while you recall the painstaking efforts that made Marquette what it became, you quickly forget that so much was lost for so big of a gain. As a reader, Tichelaar seems to be able to pull you into the characters' lives, making you appreciate everything from honorable efforts of a rich, old man who knows his time is limited to the grand ideas and changes of the industrial revolution around them.

Simply put, book one of this Marquette Trilogy is not only the first step of a love formation for the upper Michigan peninsula but for the characters who created it. You're pulled in so deeply that book one finishes with you demanding the rest of the trilogy. It's definitely going to be an addiction, so don't pick it up thinking you can stop! That's a combination that many historical fictions cannot easily bring to life between the pages. Iron Pioneers will guide you through the first years of the City of Marquette and bring you to the realization that you simply want to learn more.

The Queen City is but a few moments away on my list of books to be read! If you're a historical fiction fan of any type, this is a must read in the genre. Give this one a try. Iron Pioneers is a multigenerational saga, an old-fashioned epic novel not written by many authors today. We follow several families whose lives intertwine, regardless of social status, in ways that some of them never suspected. We meet the Hennings, whose family head Gerald, a wealthy businessman from Boston taps into the iron industry early on and makes a fortune—a fortune that proves worthless compared to the losses he will face.

The Brookfields are a tour de force in the town, shaping its values and loyalty toward their country. The Bergmanns demonstrate that despite the great sacrifices one makes immigrating to a new unknown land, their newfound freedom is worth the cost as a prosperous future opens up before them and their future generations. I especially liked the way Tichelaar blended these fictional characters with actual historical figures, making the reader almost believe this account was a true rendering of the pioneers.

This could only be done because of meticulous research, adding to my enjoyment of this book. This author has also written two other historical fiction novels that are on my TBR list: If you are a fan of American historical novels, this book will not disappoint.
