I just have really enjoyed this little book. It would make a great book for anyone divinely inspired.
It was a fast read but with work you can do after reading each section. This is a book I will reflect back upon countless times. One person found this helpful. This book has a Christian basis but is quite non-denominational. It is excellent for someone who only has a few minutes a day for thoughtful contemplation.
It is not so long that it takes forever to get through. Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. I received this book as a gift in paperback, and i had to get it on my kindle because I want to read it again and I can do so at any time with the kindle version. I have to be quite honest in saying that part of the reason I gave the book only four stars is to balance the three reviewers who gave very short reviews, with little explanation of why they gave the book five stars each.
Let me begin by explaining my title. One of the virtues of small, introductory books on a subject is that they have the opportunity to provide lots of good connections to other works, to carry you on when you have finished this volume.
I was just about to write that he neglects to cite his sources, when it occurred to me to look in the back of the book. Lo and behold, there were notes to his sources; however they were incomplete. The source of a quote from a T. Eliot poem on page 21 was not cited. A quote by Anthony de Mello, SJ on page 18 is also not cited.
This is a far more serious error. If I were intent on locating the T. Eliot quote, I would buy Kindle copies of Eliot's books probably want them anyway and search for it. But I have no clue as to who Fr. I mention this because I found his quote to be a bit overstated and thereby a bit derogatory to "most people". As I read further, I find about a third of the author's quotes are not noted, such as the Rainer Maria Rilke quote on page And quotes by the likes of Eliot and Rilke are the ones I would be most interested to track down.
I have to be a bit careful here, as I am fully aware that I approach books like this from a much different point of view than most people. That said, I sense that the author's own "back story" text is theologically and historically just a bit too simple. He says ""Jesus himself remains one of the most passionate seekers of all time. He sought to understand his purpose on earth, and once he found it I have mixed feelings about the author's framing spirituality as a constant search or journey.
There are those who think searching for a "spirit" is simply a mis-stated question.
What is really important is that all your wishes, habits, inclinations, desires, and attitudes are well-integrated. They do not work at cross purposes. That this is not inconsistant with some things Langford says himself indicates that there are still lots of worthwhile things in this book, especially among his practical exercizes. This is the kind of book you will want to get through quickly, and if it lights a spark of interest in you for "the spiritual", then you move on to the heavy hitters such as Thomas Merton, C.
Benedict this is just a very short, uncritical list. There are dozens more.
So, if you are new to this subject, do as the author says and read it through in one sitting or as few as possible and read it again, then move on to more highly nuanced stuff. I'm not catholic so don't let the book category fool you. The author touches on many of the deep and spiritual questions I had, but thought no one else did. Sometimes the book is a little esoteric, but overall, hits the mark. Most chapter exercises are very useful and doable, but some would require more down time than most of us have.

Then he thoughtfully answers with a coherent, nuanced and authorirative treatment of the spiritual life, exploring meditation, prayer, solitude, friendship, thinking, spiritual direction, discipleship and more.
I was especially taken with his chapter "Living Fully in the Moment," which proceeds from some words of Thich Nhat Hanh about mindfulness. This is not the first spiritual reflection I have read on washing dishes or laundry. This one, however, was riveting, Langford's acuity and perception took me entirely by surprise. Once again I was blindsided by the simple truth of living in the present moment with a deeper sense of the presence of God in every atom, every detail.
