But oh how I prefer my original albeit fictitious scenario! Despite not having the proper environment for this anthology, I enjoyed it much. Compiled by British author and anthologist Peter Haining 2 April — 19 November , The Mammoth Book of Haunted Houses is a collection of short stories and novellas from primarily British authors, many of which stem from the gothic tradition.
Wells, Virginia Woolf, and Stephen King. Haining himself claimed to have lived in a haunted house, so perhaps there was a certain level of personal significance attached to this project. He certainly had a fun and interesting way of introducing each story. Each tale begins with a page that is meant to resemble log entries in a real-estate transaction book, if such a thing exists. These intros look something like this:.
The country, city and sometimes neighborhood where the story takes place are mentioned here. Biographical detail of the author. Sometimes this section contains other details such as a mentioning of famous people who admire the story. Each section is comprised of stories that relate to the specified category.
The seven categories are:. All in all, there are forty-two stories in this anthology. First is the first. Written in in the gothic tradition, it is a tale about a fellow who has a strong desire to spend a night in a haunted house. He gets his wish and experiences all sorts of phenomena. Here are some interesting bits of trivia concerning that author. I am not familiar with Fay Weldon. From what I gather, Waldon is not associated with the horror or paranormal genre. However, she has given the genre a rather unique and stylistic contribution with Watching Me, Watching You.
The ghost of this story is not the traditional apparition. It may not even be literal. It is the ghost that haunts all houses. It is the ghost of sorrow, of longing, of regret. And yet, doors open, knickknacks fall from shelves, and presences are felt. The same ghost haunts two different women, one is the ex-wife of a struggling writer, and one is his current wife. Later, the ghost is able to teleport from house to house. Sometimes it remains in a house but goes to sleep for long periods of time. Other times it causes disturbances, only to be expelled from the premises, thrown out of a window inside a sigh.
Finally, the ghost learns to travel outside of time, only to reappear at different crossroads of their lives. This is an excellent piece. The protagonist, Billings, consults with a psychiatrist and tells him the sad and rather strange tale of how all three of his children were murdered by the Boogeyman. Billings displays all the essentials of a multi-dimensional character. What makes this an even greater feat is that King accomplishes this in such a small amount of space. Billings comes alive with all the shortcomings that come with being a human — prejudices, psychoses, and ignorance.
All this is subtly and effectively captured in his mannerisms and speech patterns. Once upon a time, in a land blighted by terror, there was a very clever boy. The people thought the boy could save them, so they opened their gates and sent him out into the world.
To where the monsters lived. You can't change your fate - so throw yourself into battle, because you'll either end the day a hero or drinking mead in the halls of the gods. That's what Finn's people believe. But Finn wants to live. When his settlement is massacred by a hostile nation, Finn plus several friends and rivals must make their escape across a brutal, unfamiliar landscape, and to survive, Finn will fight harder than he's ever fought before. The David Gemmell Award-nominated author of Age of Iron returns with You Die When You Die - an epic fantasy adventure in which a mismatched group of refugees battle animals and monsters, determined assassins, an unforgiving land and each other as they cross a continent to fulfil a prophecy.
More please, as soon as is humanly possible! You Die When You Die blurs the lines between hero and villain into who lives and who dies. He who survives another day wins for the moment; tomorrow might be another story' Booklist. Winner of the Hugo Award for Best NovelBook 2 in the record-breaking triple Hugo Award-winning trilogy The season of endings grows darker, as civilization fades into the long cold night. Essun has found shelter, but not her missing daughter. Instead there is Alabaster Tenring, destroyer of the world, with a request only Essun can grant.
Praise for this trilogy: Bellingford is a sleepy village set amid gently rolling countryside. Whatever scandals may occur there, they always take place behind closed doors and carefully laundered lace curtains. In short, Bellingford is a typical English village. That is until the news breaks that the Hall House has been sold at last and the rumour starts that the new occupants are to be 'two gentlemen, sharing'. With the arrival of Rich and Bless - newly in love and eager for domesticity - the scene is set for mayhem and uproar. And with Rich on a business trip to the States, Bless is plunged into a vortex of events that leaves him gasping for the cosy domesticity of Earl's Court on a Saturday night Christopher Metcalfe returns to his family home in Kent after the death of his father.
Sorting through a box of memorabilia from his days at public school, Chris is suddenly confronted by the face that has haunted him for thirty years. Then, as a callow fifth former enduring the excesses of a school system designed to run an Empire that no longer existed, a most extraordinary thing happened amid the thrashings, and cross-country runs: Now, again, alone, approaching the age of fifty, Christopher is painfully aware of the price he paid for letting go, and resolves to find Stephen, and discover what became of the only person he has ever loved.
Delicately revealing the layers of both past and present as it alternates between now and then. William Corlett's moving debut novel illuminates the vacuity of Christopher's emotional life with subtle power and poignancy, exploring a multitude of themes in his exposition of his search for identity.
